Goldie Boutilier brings her theatrical King of Possibilities Tour to Austin’s Scoot Inn, delivering a stellar three-act concert with opener Syd Taylor.
Austin’s Scoot Inn is one of those venues that still feels like a secret, even when it’s packed. The outdoor stage sits under old oak trees, string lights cutting across the yard, and as the rain stops on an April night, the crowd files in for a sold-out stop on Goldie Boutilier’s King of Possibilities Tour.
Syd Taylor opens the show. The Detroit-born singer-songwriter spent over a decade as one half of pop-rock duo Stereo Jane with her twin sister before going solo, and the experience shows. Her performance is mostly built around her voice, which is strong and sure enough to carry the set on its own.
She plays acoustic guitar for one song and pulls out an omnichord for another, adding a shimmery, almost retro texture to her sound. During songs, she throws in some dance moves that get the crowd loosened up. Taylor released her debut solo album, After the Fact, last year, and based on this set, her upcoming headline tour in June should be worth catching.
Then the lights drop. Goldie Boutilier’s voiceover introduces us to Act 1. This is the thing about the King of Possibilities Tour: Boutilier has structured the entire show as a three-act performance. Between each act, her voiceovers narrate a story of cowboys, gangsters, and politicians, tying the songs together into something that feels less like a concert and more like a film you happen to be standing inside of.
Act 1 eases the crowd in. By the time “Body Heat” closes it out, the yard at Scoot Inn has filled in tight. Act 2 picks up: “King of Possibilities” gets the biggest reaction of the night so far, people singing the hook back at the stage, but it’s Act 3 where Boutilier really takes over. “Cowboy Gangster Politician,” her most popular track, acts as a satisfying sendoff with the crowd cheering for more.
The encore is “K-Town” and then the album closer, “Goldie Montana.” She brings things back with a satisfying conclusion: watch out world.
