My Morning Jacket gave 713 Music Hall in Houston a stunning, spiritual set on a Sunday evening.

Opening the show was Australia’s own Grace Cummings. Cummings immediately commanded the stage with her raw, dynamic energy and vocals.  Playing a range of hauntingly emotional piano ballads, acoustic solos, to a full band electrical energetic performance.   Grace Cummings is a powerhouse of a performer that should not be missed.

At 8:45 the house music faded, the lights dimmed and a sort of siren began playing over the loud speakers as the energy from the crowd swelled with anticipation. My Morning Jacket hit the ground running, starting with “Everyday Magic”, a song from their recently released album simple titled: is.  And as the name of the opening song suggests, the “magic” put the audience under their spell immediately.

My Morning Jacket are no strangers to the music scene.  The band has been around for over two decades with an extensive catalog of music that has reached and resonated with fans of all ages. On this particular evening, My Morning Jacket treated Houston to a two hour long, twenty four song set, playing a handful of tracks from their latest album as well as fan favorites like “Wordless Chorus” , “Run It” and a satisfying mixture of tunes from their entire discography.  Grace Cummings even came out to join the band during their performance of “Only Memories Remain“, a meshing of talent that the audience did not know it needed.

Frontman Jim James has such a rich and angelic vocal style, paired with guitar solos, booming drums, it’s no wonder that this band has had such a ride or die fan base for so many years.  Their live performances are perfect, sounding practically identical to their recorded music.  The lights, the energy and the huge sound of the group provided an electric evening for everyone involved.

My Morning Jacket’s tour has only just begun, with dates from the group spanning all the way into late fall currently.  You absolutely do not want to miss this show if it is coming anywhere near you in the future.  The band is said to be switching up the setlist every night so each show will be a unique experience for both new and old fans of the band.
