New York’s Momma makes a stop in Houston while touring for their new record “Welcome to My Blue Sky“, with openers Brennan Wedl and On Being An Angel.
It’s a stormy Friday night in Houston but that doesn’t stop fans of indie band Momma from heading downtown to Last Concert Cafe. The line is forming down the street outside as concert goers excitedly wait for the doors to open. Soon enough it’s 7pm and everyone is ushered inside, with the most dedicated fans claiming their spot up front.
The night starts with Austin, Texas’s On Being An Angel taking the stage and wasting no time getting into their alt-indie set. Fuzzy, warm, and nostalgic, On Being An Angel plays music that sounds like summertime feels. The audience is dancing with them as they play through their setlist. Fans cheer as they finish their last song and exit the stage.

At this point the rain is coming down hard, but the crowd is cozy under the cover of the amphitheater. Nashville’s Brennan Wedl steps on to the stage. With country, folk, and indie-pop influence, Brennan Wedl’s songs are as deeply relatable as they are dancy. The audience stomps and claps along as she sings about life’s everyday moments, earning the crowd’s praise as she finishes her set.

Finally, Momma takes their places as the rain beats down on the canopy, pushing the crowd closer together and toward the stage. Momma’s indie rock feels like a breath of fresh air in the genre as they blend grunge, 90s alt rock, and good ol fashion pop to create something uniquely their own. With melodies that instantly get stuck in your head and choruses you can learn on the first listen, it’s no surprise the crowd is screaming the lyrics as loud as they can.

Momma finishes up their set, making their way through their new album Welcome To My Blue Sky. You wouldn’t have guessed the album was only recently released by the way the crowd knew every word, dancing and cheering all through the night. They left the stage briefly, only to be ushered back by fans who couldn’t get enough. They ended the night with a Narrow Head cover, and left the stage for the last time. The audience dispersed, heading toward the merch table and into the rainy night, humming the choruses of the songs they know so well.

I’m a photographer born and raised in Houston. Music has been a huge part of my life since I was a teenager, I love attending local shows and supporting the Houston music scene. If I’m not at a show I’m probably making my own music, hanging out with my cat, or binge watching RuPaul’s Drag Race.
