Known for her intricate wordplay and fascinating storytelling, North London’s own Little Simz released her newest album earlier this year, Lotus. Now ready to perform these intimate songs, she has hit the road across the globe.
It is always a treat when a rap artist brings a live band on tour, and Little Simz did just that. The live instrumentation adds another color to the performance and the overall sound of each track. As the Houston crowd came together on a chilly night, the Nigerian-English artist made her way to the stage. She began with songs like “Thief,” “Flood,” and “Two Worlds Apart.”
Simz had such radiant energy throughout the whole night. It truly looked like she was enjoying every single moment on stage. She often talked to the crowd and gave her band a chance to shine.
She also played songs from her album Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, like “I Love You, I Hate You,” “Introvert,” and “Venom.” This pleased her longtime fans who have been following her for years.
A highlight of the night was when she went into the pit and performed “101 FM,” allowing the crowd to be eye-to-eye with the UK artist.
In the middle of her set, she did something I had not seen before, she began to DJ. Yes, DJ! Her team brought out a turntable, and she put on her headphones and started to play songs. She played some of her own tracks with remixes, and with a mic attached to her rolling deck, she performed them live. This was such a fun moment for everyone in the crowd, as she encouraged fans to dance their hearts out.
To wrap up the lively show, she performed songs with the live band like “Free,” and my personal favorites, “Woman” and “Gorilla.” Little Simz is an amazing artist and performer who had many tricks up her sleeves to make this a show not to be forgotten. As she wraps up the U.S. leg of her tour, I strongly encourage you to catch a show, it’s one to remember.
