The “God Said No” World Tour is proving to be more than just a concert; it’s an experience.
There has been much discussion surrounding Omar Apollo after his hit song “Evergreen” graced our ears when it trended on TikTok for months back in 2022. But Omar has been around, releasing songs with the likes of Dominic Fike, Kali Uchis, and Daniel Caesar; and his latest tour is proof that he isn’t planning on going anywhere. Despite most shows from artists these days featuring only singing and if you’re lucky; some cool lights, Omar is doing more than just playing his songs for you. This isn’t a concert, it’s an experience.
The show opened with the up-and-coming Malcolm Todd and his band, who filled the room with groovy riffs and catchy choruses that kept the audience entertained. Throughout the performance, there were murmurs from the audience that ranged from “Who is this guy? I really like him”, to “You haven’t heard of Malcolm Todd?”. Malcolm played hits from his short, but sweet discography and built the anticipation for headlining act. He finished his set with the theme song from ICarly, which perfectly concluded the 21-year-old’s set.
When the lights dimmed for Omar’s introduction, the music swelled and the lights teased the audience for what felt like forever. Eventually, the curtain dropped and revealed a fur-coat-wearing Omar Apollo basking in the spotlight. He began his set with “Be Careful With Me” from his newest album “God Said No”. His background dancers (yes, background dancers) created a beautiful atmosphere that grew more entrancing the longer the show went on. The lighting of the entirety of the show was absolutely mesmerizing, and was a recurring theme during each act, emphasizing different emotions that the songs made you feel.
Omar’s three-act performance included a range of songs from his extensive discography, spanning from melancholy ballads such as “Petrified” to energetic anthems like “Tamagotchi”. He even paid respects to his Mexican heritage, as well as many of the Hispanic audience members in the crowd when Act 2 included “En El Olvido” as well as “Dos Uno Nueve”. The show’s finale was an encore of “Go Away”, finishing the night with a peak of liveliness and excitement. Lots of booty was thrown (by Omar, of course) and the crowd jumped up and down, concluding the enchanting experience with exhilaration as Omar waved goodbye and left the stage.
The coordination, choreography, lighting, set design, and vocals (of course), made this show an unforgettable performance. But most of all, it was a set-in-stone confirmation that Omar Apollo is, in fact; a STAR.
