Pixies and Modest Mouse pack in Toyota Music Factory in Irving, Texas for a summer show like no other.
The summer heat in Texas is no joke, so when the doors opened to welcome fans into Toyota Music Factory, it seemed as though there was a universal sign of relief and a mutual excitement for air conditioning! While some fans made their way to their seats, others found themselves crowded around the merchandise stand, indecisive on what they should purchase on the wall full of infinite options.
To warm up the already sweaty crowd for the night, Cat Power, an indie rock singer-songwriter, set up the evening with powerful yet comforting vocals. Cat Power, more formally known as Charlyn Marshall, began performing music in the early 90s, working with artists like Dave Grohl, Eddie Vedder, Sonic Youth, and Liz Phair. As Cat Power finished her amazing opening set, more and more fans began filling in their seats, anticipating for the next act, Modest Mouse.
Originally from Washington, Modest Mouse formed in 1993 as an indie rock band and have been delivering their fans unique and catchy songs ever since then. As the band made their way to the stage a wave of applause and cheer filled the venue, from the back of the lawn, all the way to the first row of seats, fans were thrilled to see this notable band live. Throughout the set, the band gave it their all, incorporating heavy riffs, trancing vocals, and ethereal percussion. Although the band members were full of sweat, and definitely feeling the notorious Texas heat, they didn’t let the high temperatures stop them from bringing an unforgettable performance to the crowd. At one point, lead singer, Isaac Brock, stuck his guitar pick right on his forehead, where it sat comfortably on the sweat. In order to complete their show with a bang, the band began the first few chords of their well-known hit song, “Float On”, in which the audience sang their hearts out to this catchy and energetic song. As the band wrapped up their set with a round of applause, the audience began preparing themselves for their beloved headliner.
As the sun slowly came down, so did the grueling heat, so fans were able to enjoy the next performance with a little bit more energy and a little less sweat! When the lights began to dim and Pixies took their places on stage, it was apparent that standing in front of Toyota Music Factory was the presence of musical geniuses. Pixies weren’t new to the music scene either, forming in Boston in 1986 by lead singer Black Francis, Pixies brought alternative rock a side music lovers had never heard before. Influencing major bands and artists such as Nirvana, Radiohead, The Strokes, PJ Harvey, and so many more for generations to come. During their performance, Pixies delivered some of their most well known and loved songs such as “Hey”, “Here Comes Your Man”, and of course “Where is my Mind?”. Although their setlist included all of their musical masterpieces, when the show made its way to the end, fans were left begging for more of this live musical perfection, and felt that time flew swiftly with each perfect riff and vocal.
As the fans flooded out of the venue with smiles on their faces and songs stuck in their heads, one couldn’t help but swear to never miss one of their amazing performances again. But, if you did miss this one, Pixies are still performing for the next few months in the U.S., Europe, and Australasia. So if you get the chance to get tickets in a city near you, you will not regret this unforgettable and unique experience of live music.
I am currently attending the University of North Texas with a photojournalism major. I love going to concerts of all genres, whether I am stage diving or headbanging, I never miss an opportunity to appreciate live music. In my free time, I enjoy thrifting for CD's and records, spending time with my cats, going to art exhibits, and traveling (especially to NYC). My biggest inspiration is Danny Clinch, and one day I aspire to open up my own gallery to showcase my work!
