On July 22nd, Indie-pop band the Drums took over the Downstairs room at White Oak Music Hall with support from Cold Hart.
The Drums have been on a rollercoaster since their founding in 2008. Currently, the band only consists of the legendary Jonny Pierce, who has taken over the creative and musical direction since 2016. Although they are known for iconic tracks like “Let’s Go Surfing” and “Money,” Pierce kept their signature sound with newer yet underrated album Abysmal Thoughts and Brutalism. The Drums will release their next album titled JONNY in October, showing how Pierce has fully taken the band under his control.
It was a humid Friday night, everyone talking about the event of the weekend – not Barbenheimer – the Drums were taking over White Oak Music Hall. The band has performed at the iconic Houston venue a couple of years back, so it was time for their might return. Pierce rocked an all black suit with orange and blue glitter stripes, and his dance moves to all songs were all the rave. The night started off with “Are U Fucked” followed by “Heart Basel,” “Best Friend” and “What You Were.” Fans were singing along the entire night, but the most memorable moments involved the crowd swaying and moshing during “Money” and “Let’s Go Surfing,” further proving its cult status 10 years later. For the encore, Pierce performed more songs from Portamento as well as new tracks from the new album such as “I Want It All.”
The show deemed to be a worthy one for Pierce, as he paused to tell Houston that seeing everyone sing back the lyrics meant so much to him. He loved Houston, and it’s safe to say that Houston had so much love for the singer, too.
I'm a full-time music journalist/photographer from Houston, number one Paramore fan and Husky dog owner. I have a B.S in Radio-Television-Film from UT Austin and a M.A in Mass Communications from the University of Houston, which makes me smart! On top of being an avid concert-goer and movie fanatic, I love bonding with others over the power of local music and media.
