On October 17th, Vundabar brought their North American tour to Houston for a lively show that had the Downstairs room at White Oak bouncing.
Taking the stage first was Courting, an alternative rock band from Liverpool. The band walked out to “family ties (with Kendrick Lamar)” by Baby Keem, successfully catching the attention of the audience right from the jump. Their whole set was full of moshing and rocking tunes, as they played songs such as “Grand National,” “Flex” and “Famous.” In between songs, the band connected with the crowd by sharing that it was their first time in Texas, performing bottle flips and even asking for any song requests. Their forty-five minute set awed everyone, leaving them sad to see them go.
Following Courting was Vundabar, an indie rock band from Boston. To reach the eyes of all the venue, the three-piece band positioned themselves across the stage. The bassist on stage right, the drummer in the middle and the lead singer/ guitarist on stage left. After getting into their spots, they began with “Life Is A Movie,” “Ash in the Sun” and “$$$.”
Like the openers, Vundabar was incredibly interactive with the crowd. They asked what everyone has been up to, revealing that someone missed a volleyball tournament for the show, and also kept chanting “Houston,” so the crowd could repeat the same after. In addition to the band’s charismatic energy, they showcased their musical power with standout songs such as “I Got Cracked” and, of course, “Alien Blues.”
Overall, the show was incredibly entertaining and kept the audience dancing all night long. Vundabar will be on tour until mid-November and are definitely ones to catch if you can!
I am from Houston, Texas and currently attending the University of Houston as a marketing major! From attending concerts, playing guitar, and collecting vinyl, I love anything that has to do with music. Some of my favorite artists include The Strokes, Omar Apollo, and boygenius. Besides that, I really like shopping, watching Pitch Perfect, and discovering new places in Houston!
