Hardcore Texas based band Kublai Khan played an insane sold out show in Houston, Texas at White Oak Music Hall on Friday May 24th, 2024. With a stacked lineup of support from bands such as Justice From The Damned, Pain of Truth, LionHeart, and Harm’s Way it was surely going to be an eventful night.
Hundreds of fans waited hours outside under the simmering Texas heat anticipatingly waiting for doors to open, having the line queue stretch all alongside the street. The exciting mingling and conversations amongst themselves is what truly brings people together and their love for music. It’s important to note that the standard for attending a metal/hardcore show is to dress up in a proper manner. This consists of an all black attire with the essential vans, converse, or doc martens to complete their outfit. It was fascinating to see how a tight knit community of fans create simply by bonding over their music that we all adapt the same traits, musical influences, and interests.
As everyone was entering the venue and getting settled, the house lights went down for the start of the show a massive uproar and screams filled the venue. Each supporting band possessed high energy and stage presence that kept up with the electrifying spirits and magnitude of the Houston Crowd who do not play around when it comes to rocking out at metal shows. As for most hardcore shows, there is always intense and intoxicating energy that spirals out of control demanding a need for liberation. It is crucial to say that the infectious force that Houston brings concluded in starting various mosh pits, crowd surfing, and headbanging along to their favorite songs. One thing about Texas is that we do not mess around with our love for live music and being able to share that passion with others.
Soon enough it was time for the main attraction of the night to hit the stage. Kublai Khan opened their set with one of their most popular and anthem worthy tracks, “Theory of Mind”, erupting the crowd into screaming back the lyrics as loud as possible. Kublai Khan played fan favorite tracks such as “The Hammer”, “Low-Tech”, and “Ant-Pile” causing a major scene in having the entire venue jumping up and down and headbanging as hard as they could. The night continued with ferocious yells from fans and the seemingly popular barking better known as the “arf arf” was mentioned a couple of times. In the middle of the set, vocalist Matt Honeycutt hyped up the crowd yelling into the microphone, “B*tch where the f*ck are we from?!” with the crowd immediately answering “Texas!” at the top of their lungs. He followed by “That’s what I’m talking about! Start a circle pit, spin that mother-”. The pure raw emotions and rage settled into the venue hyping up fans for the rest of the night.
As the end of the show was nearing a fan unexpectedly passed out during the set due to the overlying heat and crowded room. Multiple fans alerted security and venue staff to aid in assistance to help out. The band stopped midway before their final song to make sure that everything was resolved. It took quite a while for the situation to calm down but with the resilient faith of the fans coming together eased the impactful situation at hand to be resolved.
Kublai Khan ended their set with “The Hammer” sending the crowd into hysteria releasing all of their left over energy for the last track of the night. It was a monumental sold out show for the band and a memorable night for fans that they will remember for the rest of their lives. Texas knows how to party and rock hard and it’s no doubt that Kublai Khan will always return back to their roots and feel the comradery and love from local Texas fans.
