BETWEEN FRIENDS releases their sophomore album WOW!. The album brings fun synth pop vibes that are sure to get people dancing.
BETWEEN FRIENDS is the project of sibling duo Brandon and Savannah Hudson, who started their public music career in 2013 as America’s Got Talent quarterfinalists. They started Between Friends in 2017, releasing several singles and EPs, with the 2019 track “affection” becoming their first hit. In 2023, they released their debut album I Love My Girl, She’s My Boy and went on to support Conan Gray’s 2024 Europe Tour and open for Olivia Rodrigo’s BST Hyde Park headline show.
WOW! is a continuation of BETWEEN FRIENDS’ signature style, delivering synth pop songs that are sure to become club hits. Their brand of electronic pop and overall visual style feel like callbacks to the early 2000s, with their music videos embracing a lo-fi camcorder aesthetic and their sound landing somewhere similar to MGMT and Magdalena Bay. WOW! could play at a Y2K house party and fit right in.
Primarily, the album is just fun. Though it plays on nostalgia in songs like “Parking lot,” the album is also about embracing the moment. The highlight and climax of the album is “JAM!” The vocals repeat throughout the song, but the instrumental builds and drops in a way that brings it all together. It’s the type of thing that a crowd can learn quickly and embrace as a chant.
In their SoundCloud Voice Notes detailing the making of the album, BETWEEN FRIENDS cite “Chevron” as the song that inspired the album’s style. Once they had that song, they had a foundation. “Chevron” has the hard-hitting synths and anthemic chorus that make this album work, and it’s a great track to build an album around.
BETWEEN FRIENDS are touring the U.S. and Canada this September and October for their WOW! headline tour, followed by a European tour in November.
