To some, records, CDs, and cassettes are obsolete, but numerous people of all ages still collect physical music as a hobby. It may be more accessible and convenient to stream music, but there’s something so gratifying about spinning a record. Here’s five of the best record stores in Houston to visit when you’re on the hunt for your next new (or used) pressing. 

5. Space City Audio

Space City Audio is a great place to visit if you’re looking for a record store in a pretty area where there’s lots to explore. Located in Old Town Spring, the family-owned establishment opened in 2016 and is operated by Gabriel Montoya Sr. and Gabriel Montoya Jr. The shop holds a wide selection of music and stereo equipment. They have bins upon bins of used vinyl with low prices, as well as a vast selection of new vinyl. Space City Audio also has a peaceful courtyard out front, which is a lovely spot to read or listen to music.

4. Vinal Edge Records

In the heart of the Heights, Vinal Edge is a small yet spectacular record store owned by Chuck Roast. Since 1985, they have provided Houstonians with the gift of physical music and friendly vibes. They have a welcoming staff and a variety of LPs, CDs and stereo equipment. Vinal Edge is located in a booming area with plenty of surrounding food and retail shops, helping you turn your trip to the record store into a full day of activities.

3. Sig’s Lagoon

Located in Midtown, Sig’s Lagoon contains a plethora of new and used vinyl. The two-story record store has a kind and knowledgeable staff and an impressive inventory of LPs, artwork, memorabilia, posters and more. Sig’s Lagoon is well known for its interior design — the walls are covered in posters and there’s dozens of records hanging from the ceiling. The store’s location is one of the many things that make the Sig’s Lagoon experience so special. It’s Midtown’s only record store and is surrounded by trendy shops, restaurants and bars. Visiting Sig’s Lagoon is a must for the next time you’re on the hunt for some records. 

2. Sound Revolution

With two locations in Houston, Sound Revolution is a one stop shop for all your music needs. The stores are family-owned and operated by Sunne Walton and Donnie McClure. Since 1976, Sound Revolution has been providing the community with good music and quality service. Both locations are jam packed with LPs and CDs of all genres. The stores also carry skateboards and skateboard parts, clothing, jewelry, decor, stereo equipment, DVDs and crystals. Shopping at Sound Revolution truly is an experience that any music lover would dig.  

1. Cactus Music

Cactus Music is easily one of Houston’s most iconic and well known record stores. The shop was opened in 1975 by the Daily family and is co-owned by Quinn Bishop. For nearly 50 years, Cactus Music has remained one of the most celebrated music stores in Houston. The 5,800 square foot store contains countless music, memorabilia and gifts for every music lover. They even hold in-store performances. Covered from floor to ceiling in posters, artwork and record sleeves, Cactus Music is a dream come true for vinyl collectors.
