Ginger Root puts on special one-night-only concert at the Novo in Downtown Los Angeles.
Indie soul music act, Ginger Root, performed a special one-night show at the Novo in Downtown Los Angeles. Similar to Ginger Root’s presence in the music scene, the show was nothing short of unique, presenting itself within an overarching storyline and featuring new segments that played between songs, a stage decked out with props, and a cameraman with a VHS camera filming live footage of the performance. Ginger Root consists of Cameron Lew, the mastermind behind the music and his old high school friends, Matt Carney on drums and Dylan Hovis on bass, who accompany him whenever he performs live. Their music mixes soul and city pop, taking a lot of inspiration from retro Japanese aesthetic for not only their sound, but their videos and aesthetic as well. They made sure to showcase their unique signature style visually in their concert as well, having their stage decorated with makeshift city buildings and vintage TVs, making for a fun and immersive live performance.
Throughout their set, Ginger Root performed two complete EPs, including hit singles such as “Loretta” and “City Slicker.” Their set featured some fun surprises including a saxophone solo from their manager during the bridge of “Loretta.” Before their last two songs, Cameron brought out crew members from his music videos and promotional videos, some of which played during the concert, for a Q&A. Each crew member introduced themselves and their roles on set and proceeded to answer random questions such as what their guilty pleasure anime was. Overall Ginger Root made for an unforgettable night of music and fun for their loving fans, who in one way showed their dedication for the band with a constant long wait at the merch table.
