Shortly after the release of their newest album, Parallel Realms, indie band, STRFKR, set off on their 2024 U.S. tour. On April 13, 2024, the group brought all the vibes to White Oak Music Hall in Houston, Texas. Joining them on their stop was happy sad face and Ruth Radlet.
Starting off the night was happy sad face, a psych-pop singer that knew just how to pump up the energy with their music and a little bit of comedy. As the performer walked out in a long dark wig and a shirt with a picture of abs, the audience new it was going to be a great set. With only a single and an album out, happy sad face was able to share much of his discography, allowing the crowd to see the versatility in his music. Throughout the set, he was playing with his wig and dancing all while showcasing his strong vocals.
Next up was Ruth Radlet, a Californian artist best known as the front-woman of Chromatics. As the room swayed to her music, Radlet’s soft vocals and chill stage presence made the crowd fall in love with her. She played originals such as “Stranger” and “Shoot Me Down,” and did covers such as “Twilight” by Elliot Smith and “Leaving the Table” by Leonard Cohen.
Concluding the night was the band everyone was waiting in anticipation to see, STRFKR. Right from the start, that band took the audience on a trip to another realm as their synth-pop tunes filled the air and their set was revealed. On stage, the members were spread out, wearing all black. In between them were two dancers dressed in gold cloaks and metal masks. To top things off, they had colorful lights to move to the beat and a projector to display large psychedelic visuals for each song. It was a pretty cool setup and just added to the experience of the show. The show kicked-off with “While I’m Alive,” “Together Forever” and “Kahlil Gibran,” an upbeat start to a great show.
The twenty-four song set was filled with a great mix of the group’s discography. Many of the songs they performed were from their newest album, Parallel Realms, but they made sure to get some older ones in there as well, going all the way back to their first album from 2008, Starfucker. Standout songs included “Always/ Never,” “Atlantis” and, of course, their hit “Rawnald Gregory Erickson the Second.”
Overall, it was an stunning night with amazing music and performances all around. STRFKR was even better than expected and from the crowds reactions, you can tell they loved them as well. With the band on tour until August, you still have time to catch them while you can! Keep track of their tour here.
I am from Houston, Texas and currently attending the University of Houston as a marketing major! From attending concerts, playing guitar, and collecting vinyl, I love anything that has to do with music. Some of my favorite artists include The Strokes, Omar Apollo, and boygenius. Besides that, I really like shopping, watching Pitch Perfect, and discovering new places in Houston!
