The one year anniversary of Japanese Breakfast’s ambient soundtrack produced for Shredwork’s exploration and adventure video game Sable

Indie pop and alternative band Japanese Breakfast fronted by vocalist Michelle Zauner had the chance to score a soundtrack for the popular and beloved video game Sable. It’s been one year since the soundtrack was released on September 24, 2021 to accompany the release of Sable as an auditory and other worldly experience upon playing the game. The album includes 32 tracks from Japanese Breakfast which corresponds to a specific chapter of the game’s story.

The video game was created by U.K duo Daniel Fineberg and Gregoris Kytherotis. The self-titled gameplay follows the story of the main protagonist, Sable, who undergoes a self-discovery journey upon leaving her camp ground into a world full of new experiences and places to explore. Within the game you can complete quests, solve puzzles, and interact with other characters. The imagery and graphics for Sable were influenced by the animation style of Studio Ghibli creating a unique visual world. As you explore different places on Sable, the visuals and color palette differ – creating alternate breathtaking scenery.

“Glider” is the track that comes after Sable sets afoot and leaves her home off to an unknown world and ready to experience all of what life has to offer. The celestial ambience styled synths paired with the passionate and moving vocals from Michelle Zauner sets the tone of the soundtrack as the epitome of an unwinding yet euphoric field of emotions. The influence of the track is a mix between Zauner’s, Japanese Breakfast indie pop sound intertwined with a shoegaze spaciness arrangement.

“Glider” is a melodic track that perfectly captures the bittersweet and exciting feeling of leaving your comfort zone and creating your next adventure. The lyrics read, “I’m caught between the wind and parts of the unknown. A door between two worlds, a sight to see”.
