American/Canadian alt rock artist grandson released his first independent album on XX Records.
grandson is the project of American/Canadian artist Jordan Benjamin. His take on blending EDM and rock with lyrics that follow in the tradition of Rage Against the Machine’s topical political anthems. He burst onto the scene with his 3X Platinum 2013 hit single “Blood // Water,” a climate change protest song that shows off his unique style.
Introducing INERTIA
INERTIA is grandson’s third studio album, and his most political work yet. grandson has always been a political artist. But now, as an independent artist, he’s not mincing words. Rather than using artful metaphors like in “Blood // Water,” grandson clearly takes sides on specific issues.
This approach has its advantages and disadvantages; it’s completely possible to miss the message of “Blood // Water” and enjoy it as a pure rock song. But singing without subtext makes it harder to reach an audience outside of those who already agree with you. Additionally, grandson tries to write about the immediate political moment in this album. The problem with his approach is that music takes time to create and release. The songs seem to be talking about 2024’s politics, and while 2025’s politics are similar to 2024’s, there’s still a distinct difference.
For these reasons, the track “God is an Animal” is one of the strongest on the project. The song doesn’t attempt the specifics of the rest of the album, instead using a broader metaphor to deliver its political message. “God is an Animal” is a condemnation of hierarchical religion and abuse of power, but it’s able to get those ideas across in an artful way. grandson actually initially wrote the song years ago and only recently completed it, which speaks to its timeless message. And it of course helps that catchy, head-banging guitar riffs play throughout.
Overall, the album still has the political rock energy that will make for an exciting live show. Yelling these songs and jumping in mosh pits will be cathartic for fans. However, it is a bit disappointing that the album feels slightly dated upon release, rather than the timeless anthems of grandson’s best work.
