For One Night Only: Flipturn Rocks The Texas State Fair in Dallas

Indie-Rock band Flipturn performs an incredible set at the annual Texas State Fair in Dallas, Texas.

The Texas State Fair boasted many things such as food, fun, and rides, but the music at the fair was probably the crown jewel of the Texas State Fair. Especially when the band known as Flipturn came out, drawing a crowd of adoring fans and captivating their audience from the start to the end of their performance.

For those not in the know, Flipturn is an indie rock band hailing from Fernandina Beach, Florida. The band was formed by Dillon Basse, Madeline Jarman, and Tristian Duncan during their senior year of high school. Their lineup would consist of Dillon Basse as the band’s guitarist, and Madeline Jarman as the band’s bassist, this small but mighty band would go on to do iconic things in the music world. As time passed, the band slowly but surely began to find their place in the music world. They would expand their lineup of talented musicians adding guitarist/synth player Mitch Fountain and drummer Devon VonBlason to the band’s talented roster. Their crowds also kept growing bigger and bigger, and so did their audience’s enthusiasm and devotion to their music.

They would go on to release two hits that would gain them their devoted fan base and would skyrocket them in the mainstream as we know it today. The first single was released in 2017 known as ‘Chicago’ off their ‘Heavy Colors’ EP. The song ‘Chicago’ is an iconic song about getting away from the mundanity of suburban life and paving your own path. Their second hit  song, entitled ‘August’ off their ‘Citrona’ EP, is a powerful love ballad that manages  to capture a feeling of remembering and nostalgia with every vocal and guitar riff that plays. The well-spoken vocals and well-written lyrics manage to capture the listener and leave them wanting more. Their impressive discography isn’t the only notable thing about them, playing alongside phenomenal bands such as  Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Mt Joy, and many more.

It would be clear that their concert at the Texas State Fair would be nothing short of amazing, like their past performances. The amphitheater began filling up with eager anticipation, and excitement as the audience made their way to the stage. As Flipturn took the stage opening with their iconic song ‘Churches’ off their Citrona EP the crowd was hyped, grooving and dancing along to the beat of tracks such as ‘Savannah’ ‘Chicago’  and ‘Sad Disco.’ The bands’ energy was insane to say the least, with the drummer departing the stage at one point and drumming on top of the barricade close to the crowd. They would also throw band property into the crowd such as a drumstick and a guitar pick for a lucky fan to keep it.

However, what was probably the most remarkable moment of the night is when the band played exclusive snippets from their upcoming ‘Burnout Days’ album at the show. The crowd was ecstatic, listening to every word attentively, stunned that they were getting the exclusive experience of being the first to hear these new tracks. As the show came to a close, fans enthusiastically cheered the band out, celebrating their dynamic performance. It’s become clear to anyone watching that this band has certainly come a long way from their humble Florida roots, playing out in the Lone Star state.

It’s become clear to anyone watching that Flipturn is certainly making a name for themselves in the music scene, reaching new heights every day, and we here at Off Record Media are certainly excited to see where they go next.

I'm from Plano, Texas. As an advanced technical theater student at Plano East Senior High, I have a deep passion for physical media, particularly collecting records and CDs. I'm also an avid member of my high school's tech crew, where I spend much of my time building and assembling, which fuels my creativity. When I'm not in the classroom shop crafting the next set piece, you can find me vibing to the eclectic sounds of Le Tigre, They Might Be Giants, and Mazzy Star.

I am a Dallas-based photographer. I am social media manager and photographer for indie-rock band Laredo Two as well as writer and photographer for Prosper's online newspaper, Eagle Nation Online. I have always had a passion for anything music from playing shows myself (I play bass and guitar) to music photography. When I am not taking pictures or at a concert, I run a small jewelry business and work at a local guitar shop!
