On April 5th, 2024, beloved indie band, Video Age dazzled their fans at Houston’s Secret Group. This show marks one of the last stops on their Away From the Castle Spring 2024 tour. At this show, they were supported by bands Astragal and Mind Shrine, who primed the crowd for the night to come.
Astragal is a local legend in the Houston indie scene, dubbing themselves as “Houston’s #1 Craigslist Boy Band.” The band played a variety of songs off of their new album “Pure Cashmere.” They are the definition of indie funk, and were amazing to see opening for a larger band like Video Age.
Their smooth vocals paired with their polished instrumentals brought much enjoyment and excitement to the fans as the venue began to fill up. Definitely check them out if you are interested in the local Houston music scene.
Next, Mind Shrine took the stage. Although their music is much more lowkey and paired with chilled vocals and beats, the crowd went wild. One girl in the audience screamed and shouted as the main singer looked directly after. After the set was over, she proclaimed that this was her third time seeing them, and touted the set list that the singer gave to her before she left the stage.
Although Mind Shrine is definitely more of an indie cult classic, they still lit up the room and members of the audience swayed along to their dancy beats, and brought the audience even closer together in the small room.
After the Mind Shrine set, they joined the audience in the crowd as they waited for Video Age. Even in the crowd, the band was avidly signing autographs and taking pictures with enthused fans.
Lastly, the long-awaited Video Age came on stage, eliciting cheers and shouts from the audience. They began their set with the song “Better Than Ever” from their newest album Away From the Castle. As friends danced along, bringing positive energy into the audience, it was clear that this was no regular indie concert. This concert was one of fun and camaraderie, as fans were extremely friendly and were passionate about the music being played.
They continued their set with songs from their albums Pop Therapy and Living Alone, and played a majority of the songs from their newest album. Fans cheered along to every word, and seemed to be eating up every minute of it.They ended their set with the song “Days to Remember.”
This show was one of the most entertaining indie shows I have gone to, simply because the energy was so infectious, it was difficult to not dance and enjoy the music with the rest of the crowd. Check out Video Age, and any new releases they may have.
