The horror inspired band makes an impression on the local hardcore scene.
The thick air and dark luminance set the scene for death metal band Pulse. Each wall is lined up with people in their dark and morbid costumes leaving the middle of the venue wide open. As soon as the grimey hardcore tone vibrates throughout the room, the middle of the venue begins to fill with ruthless individuals “crowd killing” as the band called it.
Kicking, flipping, cartwheel kick-punch combos, and punching moves never seen before are being thrown wall to wall into the crowd. A culture shock to say the least. The hardcore scene is one of the most diverse scenes and it takes a feverish person to admire the talent and environment which makes this scene so sacred.
Prior to Pulse, drummer Nathaniel Taylor also known as “The boy” played in a punk band called ‘Spit.’ The aggression and passion was still present within “The boy” when he played with ‘Spit.’ but taking on this new identity within the hardcore scene has amplified that passion. There’s also a significant difference in crowd participation compared to ‘Spit. and Pulse shows. Everyone already knew what to do when the bands started playing. The “crowd killers” show no mercy no matter who you are. It takes a fiery person to take on the hardcore scene and that was learned real quickly dodging punches and roundhouse kicks to the face. Looking around with adrenaline high, the violent aggressive persona is a part of the scene and they live for this rush.
The inspiration behind this switch of scenes from punk to death metal was when they all met at a “Eyehategod” show where long time friends guitarist Noah Hammond and vocalist Chance Walsh met bassist Jake Rose as well as “The boy”. “It’s just a bunch of friends making horror movie based death metal death metal cause we all love horror movies and heavy music of all kinds,” Walsh said. “It’s just us having fun.”
This up and coming death metal group has lots to look forward to with planning a demo single prior to the recording of their first EP. Pulse is present within the Arlington and Denton music scene and has a show at Kiki’s House in Dallas November 4th. I’d wear a helmet.
