Stormy Skies, Bright Sounds: Two Door Cinema Club Shines at White Oak Music Hall

While on their nearly sold-out U.S. and Canada tour, Two Door Cinema Club stopped at White Oak Music Hall in Houston for a great show accompanied by Day Wave.

Houston isn’t generally known for its amazing weather. After a recent derecho and several storms, the weather on May 29, 2024, was no different than the previous few days. However, this time, Two Door Cinema Club was in town and they had a sold-out show outside on the Lawn at White Oak Music Hall. Although the clouds were dark and it was pouring a few hours before the show, the band and fans got incredibly lucky. They beat the odds, and the show went on.

Opening for the band was Day Wave, an indie rock solo-project by Jackson Philips. The musician’s dreamy synths and upbeat tempos gave for a great start to the night. Shortly after the beginning of the set, Philips revealed to the crowd that he hadn’t performed in Houston in around five years. It was a sweet connection between the artist and the Houston crowd as they welcomed him and his band back to the city. A standout song was, “Potions,” a song from the 2020 EP, Crush.

About thirty minutes after Day Wave finished their set, Two Door Cinema Club burst onto the stage. They kicked off with “This Is the Life,” followed by “I Can Talk” and “Sleep Alone,” creating an electrifying start that perfectly set the tone for the rest of the night.

Hailing all the way from Northern Ireland, TDCC is a three-piece indie band composed of Alex Trimble, Sam Halliday, and Kevin Baird. With a vibrant fusion of indie rock and electronic pop, the band has successfully created a timeless sound that has demonstrated amazing longevity since their formation in 2007.

The performance continued with a fantastic mix of the group’s discography, featuring songs from their 2022 album Keep on Smiling, their 2012 album Beacon and, of course, hit tracks from their debut album Tourist History, including “What You Know” and “Undercover Martyn.”

Overall, it was a great night to be a TDCC fan in Houston. The band just announced another leg of their U.S. and Canada tour starting in mid-July until October, find more info for the tour here and check them out if you can!

I am from Houston, Texas and currently attending the University of Houston as a marketing major! From attending concerts, playing guitar, and collecting vinyl, I love anything that has to do with music. Some of my favorite artists include The Strokes, Omar Apollo, and boygenius. Besides that, I really like shopping, watching Pitch Perfect, and discovering new places in Houston!
