Speedy Ortiz Thrills the Ghosts of the Aztec Theater with a Chilling Performance in San Antonio

On Tuesday, September 24th, Philly-native Speedy Ortiz played for the spirits and humans of the Aztec Theatre in San Antonio, Texas.

Speedy Ortiz played the historical Aztec Theater in San Antonio this past Tuesday and lit up the crowd, as well as the dead. Through their alternative performance and unique sound, everyone in the room couldn’t help but put their phones down and jump around. They kicked off the night with high energy, incredible riffs and passionate playing; which took the audience by surprise in the best way.

After the first four songs, the lead singer, Sadie Dupuis (who has close ties to Texas; she used to work at Waterloo Records in Austin) informed the audience of the many ghosts that live in the haunted Aztec Theater. The theme of spooks and specters continued through the night, and the band even dedicated songs to the former theater manager, who is said to haunt the building. Throughout the entire performance, the band had incredible stage presence and the audience’s energy was proof of such. They played through their extensive discography, performing songs from their latest album Rabbit Rabbit and even traveling back to their debut album, Major Arcana

Their set ended with their hit song “No Below,” which is featured in the video game Life is Strange (which they have yet to play, but have heard good things about). The song features one of the most incredible and hypnotizing guitar riffs of our time, and it was an astonishing display to leave the audience with. The performance was one of absolute cohesion and passion, which is something that is quite rare to come by nowadays. Each band member was proving through each note that they had much love for what they do. The best part about the show, though, was Speedy Ortiz’s consistent creativity. Whether that be through Sadie’s compression sleeve to help aid her injured arm, the plates with setlists written in sharpie scattered all over the floor, the bright and extravagant colors in each member’s attire, or incredibly vibrant stage lighting; a Speedy Ortiz show is something you want to see.

I'm an Austin-based photographer and filmmaker. I'm a mother of two (cats) and I love picking up expensive hobbies to spend all of my money on, whether that be tattoos, vinyl, or concerts. My top three artists are Dijon, Mk.gee, and Dominic Fike. I love to travel and learn new ways to fulfill myself creatively. My biggest aspiration is to find the most imaginative way to seamlessly combine my 3 favorite things: film, photography, and music.
