Taylor Gayle Rutherfurd, also known as GAYLE, brings the ‘Scared but Trying’ tour to Houston’s Warehouse Live on October 19th with special guest, DYLAN.
You may know GAYLE from the inevitable Tik Tok track “ABCDEFU” and touring with major artists like Taylor Swift and P!NK, but she is an absolute pop-punk force to be reckoned with. The 19 year old singer from Texas has been on the rise since her track went viral, but her tracks are more than that – throughout her multiple EPs and standalone releases, Gayle shows how she was influenced by emo and alternative genres. After serving as an opener for tours, playing one-off shows and even co-writing a song for a motion picture soundtrack, Gayle is now taking on a huge challenge in music: a headlining cross-country tour.
It was a cool night in Houston, and fans prepared for a wild time at Warehouse Live. To start off the night, opener and English-pop singer Dylan performed an energetic set for fans. Her set included songs like “Someone Else” and “Treat You Bad,” as well as new singles “Rebel Child” and “Liar Liar.” The highlight of her set was the song “You’re Not Harry Styles,” which also included a nice interpolation of Harry Styles “Kiwi.” As she left the stage, she made the crowd scream “We Love You, Gayle!” in hopes that the headliner was listening. (in a pleasant surprise, Dylan offers fans to check out her full setlist here.)
It was around 9PM at the Studio in Warehouse Live, and fans were eager. The lights dimmed and Gayle came rushing out the stage, starting off with “indieedgycool,” “sleeping with my friends” and “leave me for dead.” She stops to thank the crowd for showing up to her first headline tour before continuing to play songs like “weed” and “don’t call me pretty.” As the singer is a rising star, Gayle included multiple covers, such as “I Love Rock ‘n Roll” by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, “London Bridge” by Fergie and “Get the Party Started” by P!NK. She ended her set with a rock rendition of her most well-known track “ABCDEFU,” a musical take artists with hugely popular songs seem to take nowadays.
GAYLE is the definition of lively and spirited – her interactions with her band are natural and joyous, proving her passion for what she does. All of her fans in the Houston venue sang every lyric at the top of their lungs, and Gayle made sure to take note of it by interacting back. She never grew tired of running up and down the stage or head-banging like crazy, all Gayle did was match Houston’s energy. She is on the rise and will continue to be one of the world’s favorite upcoming artists, and we can’t wait to see who she tours with next, when her next headlining tour will be, or what bigger venues she set to play in the near future.
I'm a full-time music journalist/photographer from Houston, number one Paramore fan and Husky dog owner. I have a B.S in Radio-Television-Film from UT Austin and a M.A in Mass Communications from the University of Houston, which makes me smart! On top of being an avid concert-goer and movie fanatic, I love bonding with others over the power of local music and media.
