Singer Sarah McLachlan Holds an Intimate Show in Houston

Sarah McLachlan and Feist paired up for a beautifully intimate show at the Smart Financial Center. This show was McLachlan’s last stop on her Stumbling To Ecstasy tour and welcomed an amazing crowd.

Fans from all over the Houston area gathered at Sugarland’s Smart Financial Center in preparation for Sarah McLachlan and Feist. What was so unique about this concert was the clear diversity in McLachlan’s fan base. Some fans were middle schoolers, attending their first ever concert, anxiously lining up at the security, clearly excited for the night to come. Other fans were original fans of McLachlan, waiting at the box office for their paper tickets.

First, Canadian indie-rock band, Feist, came on stage, lead by Leslie Feist, lead singer and creator of the band. Recently, the band has drawn a number of younger fans from the band’s appearance on “The Bachelor” on Maria and Joey’s one-on-one date, in which Maria was so moved to tears by their performance. That two minute appearance is nothing compared to their real life stage presence.

Before the band began their set, an audience member yelled “we love you Sarah”, to which Feist responded, “I’m not Sarah but we’re Feist”, before they began their enchanting set. They pulled from a variety of their albums, including their newest release “Multitudes” and the popular “Let It Die”. It was a beautifully haunting mellow set, oftentimes, the main singer interacted with the audience eliciting cheers.

After singing “Borrow Trouble”, Feist asked the audience if they had “ever heard of the phrase “borrow trouble?” It’s from the old days, and now you all know it too”. She also shouted out her dad, who was an audience member at the show, and ended the set beautifully.

Next, fans cheered as McLachlan appeared on stage ready to begin her set. She began her set with the song “Sweet Surrender”, and afterwards thanked the audience for being there. She encouraged them to cheer as loud as they could since it was her last performance for this tour. Afterwards, she played “Building a Mystery” on her acoustic guitar, looking absolutely angelic, and followed it up with her famous song “I Will Remember You” on the grand piano.

McLachlan’s set was beautifully done, with unique vocals meant to enchant the audience. After her song, “Drifting” she explained that it was meant for an ex-boyfriend, and followed it up with a handful of other songs from her album “Afterglow”. After her compilation of older songs, she played a set of songs from her album “Fumbling Towards Ecstacy”, and ended the night with an encore playing an unreleased song “Gravity” and “Angel”.

Overall, the two singers worked to create a beautiful night with an amazing atmosphere for their fans.

I am a student at University of Houston currently studying Strategic Communications. In my free time, I write for different publications as I am extremely passionate about music. I collect vinyls, go to concerts, and play guitar. Some of my favorite artists include Paramore, Kendrick Lamar, and Lorde. On the weekends I make pottery, sew, and spend time with my dog.
