Rock band Flipturn brought the Disco to Dallas

Flipturn spent their 3rd night on tour at the Factory at Deep Ellum, along with openers Richy Mitch & The Coal Miners.

On Friday, March 8th, Indie-band Flipturn took the stage in Dallas playing a blend of songs: ranging from music off their 2022 album Shadowglow, older songs from their EP, as well as new tracks and covers. The audience erupted with energy the moment the band members stepped on stage, but it was during the third song “Chicago,” that they truly went wild. When lead singer Dillon Basse said “Sing it if you know it,” fans eagerly accepted the invitation, taking over the chorus of the song.

When it seemed like the energy couldn’t get any higher, the lights illuminated the disco ball at the perfect moment. It was in the middle of their song “Sad Disco,” when the giant disco ball on the ceiling began reflecting throughout the whole venue. The crowd continued jumping up and down to the beat of the song as they savored their moments under the shining disco ball.

In the song “Playground,” drummer Devon VonBalson delivered a performance like no other. He got up on the barricade and began drumming into the crowd. Surrounding him, outstretched arms aimed to capture this moment on video. However, he wasn’t quite done after this. As he sat back down he continued playing the drums for the song “Whales” with the drum on his head. He kept up his dynamic stage performance for the rest of the night.

As the set neared the end the band spoke on their song “Take Care.” “We tour all the time and sometimes that can get in your head a little bit,” said Dillon Basse. He told the crowd the song was put “In the very end of the record to remind you to take care of yourself.” This message is quite evident through the lyrics, through the phrases “slow down,” or “save your strength.”

Before the band left the stage for their encore, bass player Madeline Jarman wished the crowd a “Happy International Women’s Day,” while expressing how today is a “dream come true.” With fans screaming nearly every lyric to their songs and the band giving the performance their all, the energy was unmatched.

Opening for Flipturn was the band Richy Mitch & The Coal Miners, a folk/rock group from Colorado. Many may know them from their song “Evergreen” which blew up on Tiktok. Aside from that song they currently have three albums, and recently released a new single on March 14th. The crowd immediately began chanting “Richy,” before they could even get any words in. Though Mitch Cutts, the lead singer, was quick to say how excited the band was to play in Dallas for the first time. “It’s gonna be a great night, can’t wait to jump out there with you guys after this,” Cutts said. The band ended their set with Cutts on the piano for their last song “Lucerne.”

I am a Dallas-based photographer who has an appreciation for both the arts and music! Besides photographing concerts, I also enjoy doing creative portraits and working in Photoshop. I spend my free time either playing the cello, guitar, or piano or collecting CDs and vinyls. I would say my top three favorite artists are Peter McPoland, The Beatles, and Harry Styles! I’m currently a senior in high school, but I plan to major in graphic design and one day turn concert photography into a career.
