Concert goers were treated to a night of electronic artistry at 713 Music Hall on Friday, as RL Grime gave Houston exactly what it had been waiting for.
Shortly before taking the stage at around 10:20 pm, the atmosphere immediately shifted in the venue. Dramatic white stage lights coated the stage near the front row, giving way to a curtain of fog torn apart by a dramatic laser light display, signaling RL Grime’s entrance.
Wasting no time getting to his set, the energy in the venue erupted alongside the impressive array of stage visuals. The crowd jumped in tandem with the basslines and didn’t seem to rest throughout the performance. RL Grime gave fans a skillfully crafted setlist that felt nostalgic yet cutting-edge at the same time, blending a few of his earlier tracks and classic hits with newer, more modern releases.
RL’s experience as an artist and seasoned performer was immediately apparent as he expertly gauged the crowd’s reactions, oscillating between high-energy headbangers and more melodic, trance-like numbers. The progression of the performance had an almost hypnotic rhythm to it, with each drop and transition ebbing and flowing like the tide. Each of the tracks blended seamlessly into the next, leaving fans perfectly suspended in the present moment, wondering where the performance began and where the experience ended.
As the set came to a close, RL Grime signed off to thunderous applause and a leaping ovation. The residual energy in the venue could be felt well after fans had made their way outside. The performance left newer fans and seasoned concert goers alike with a lasting reminder of the boundless nature of electronic music. After signing off to yet another ecstatic crowd, RL Grime continues to redefine the meaning of the word ‘concert’.
