On August 9th, indie-folk band Richy Mitch & The Coal Miners collaborated with Caamp in the release of an extended version of their most popular song “Evergreen.”
Seven years ago, in 2017, Richy Mitch & the Coal Miners released a track titled “Evergreen.” This song is full of emotion, evoking feelings of love, nostalgia and adventure. After gaining traction on social media, the song now has over 660 million streams on Spotify. Though with all this love on the song there have been many complaints of it being too short. With “Evergreen” being only one minute and twenty-seven seconds long, fans’ wishes were answered this past month. Richy Mitch & The Coal Miners collaborated with the Ohio-based folk band Caamp to make an extended version of “Evergreen,” and this release could not have been any more perfect.
The band announced the single release at FairWell Festival, when lead singer Mitch Cutts welcomed Caamp on stage to sing Evergreen with them. The song was released on August 9th, a few weeks after this live performance, and is now available on streaming platforms.
The new song, nearly three minutes long, stays true to the original while introducing new instruments and sounds. “Evergreen (feat. Caamp)” opens with the familiar strumming pattern and chords, but introduces the percussion from the start. Hidden instrumentals, such as descending piano notes, shine through, adding to the warmth of the track.
About halfway through the song, where the original would have ended, it picks back up again with the instruments. The lyrics come back in again, and the phrase “Finding out which way the road’s got you pulled,” contrast the opening lyrics “Locked in a stalemate.” While the song may be interpreted in various ways, the lyrics seem to depict a personal journey, metaphorically represented through nature.
The song closes out in a similar way as the original, but the added electric guitar solo weaved within, adds a sense of depth. It does not overpower and take away from the main theme, but instead adds texture and a rich sound before the song ends. All the little parts of the song come together to create a rich and beautiful tone.
While “Evergreen (feat. Caamp)” is a remake, it maintains a unique sound of its own. The extended version of the song has a more pronounced folk feel, influenced by Caamp’s distinctive style. All the added elements create more emotion, and a fuller tone while still staying true to the original.
I am a Dallas-based photographer who has an appreciation for both the arts and music! Besides photographing concerts, I also enjoy doing creative portraits and working in Photoshop. I spend my free time either playing the cello, guitar, or piano or collecting CDs and vinyls. I would say my top three favorite artists are Peter McPoland, The Beatles, and Harry Styles! I’m currently a senior in high school, but I plan to major in graphic design and one day turn concert photography into a career.
