Deep in the heart of Denton square lies one of Denton’s most historically rich and unique shops selling books, records, CDs, and other vintage items.
Originally established in 1983, Recycled Books is not a new spot for Denton locals to shop around at. Even before the building transformed into a book and music store, the building was in use as an opera house, with operas and local talent shows being held on the regular. After ceasing its full operation in 1913, the building remained intact, but made into a department store. A few years following the transition of ownership, Recycled Books was born. Selling used books, CDs, records and movies, the store will continue to cater to the Denton community for years to come.
During the summer of 1998, the building was painted its iconic purple exterior, being a constant eye-catching building on the Denton square to this day. After years of operation, Recycled Books is still a very popular shop to visit for all ages. Many college students will spend an evening stopping in to add to their music collection or take a look at collectible figures. Older adults may be found browsing for books or filling through the extensive and wide-ranging vinyl record section.
One of the most unique things about Recycled Books is the interior. With an upstairs filled with classical books, and downstairs with a plethora of genres, and countless rooms decorated based on subject. For example, leading straight from the metaphysical and religion based room, is a gardening room, decorated with flowers, vines and all things botanical. Other themed rooms include an aquatic corner, with ocean blue walls full of newspaper cutouts of sea creatures, or the travel room with maps and pictures foreign locations all over the walls. No matter what you are interested in, Recycled Books has a special spot for you.
As for music, the CD, cassette and record section, it is a popular spot to find new, underground, old and local music. Whether you are into punk rock, classical or shoegaze music, there is a plethora of different genres and artists to browse through. There is even a section with more rare and collectible items from notable artists. Recycled books has an exclusive section just to put some highlights on local North Texas artists and create a little bit of buzz for their music.
Overall, if you are looking for a new (but also historically rich) spot to hangout with friends, take pictures, and of course, shop for media and books, then Recycled Books is the place to go. Surrounded by a square full of food, venues, and other shops, taking a trip to Recycled Books is a perfect way to create a day or night full of music, culture, and fun.
I am currently attending the University of North Texas with a photojournalism major. I love going to concerts of all genres, whether I am stage diving or headbanging, I never miss an opportunity to appreciate live music. In my free time, I enjoy thrifting for CD's and records, spending time with my cats, going to art exhibits, and traveling (especially to NYC). My biggest inspiration is Danny Clinch, and one day I aspire to open up my own gallery to showcase my work!
