On Wednesday September 27, 2023, Quarters of Change performed for a sold-out crowd at White Oak Music Hall in Houston, Texas. The show was accompanied by bands, Vision Arcade and Rebounder.
Kicking off the show was the Texas-based band, Vision Arcade. Coming out on stage with an abundance of energy, the crowd quickly warmed up to the group and gave them all the love from the beginning. They played originals such as “Hey Honey,” and “Afterglow,” but the crowd really went wild when they performed a cover of Queen of the Stone Age’s “Make It Wit Chu.” They asked the crowd to chime in on the bridge, and the crowd happily obliged. Their set concluded with “Fire Away,” which left the crowd pumped and ready for the rest of the show.
Next up was popular indie band, Rebounder. Their upbeat music and comedic personalities brought joy to the audience. From “Meet Me At the Bar,” to “Boy Friday” and “Dreamland,” the band played their most popular hits and had the whole crowd dancing. A girl in the crowd even shouted, “you ate!” To which lead singer, Dylan Chenfeld, jokingly replied, “No Sh*t.” As the night kept going, they ended the set with a rock rendition of Peter Bjorn and John’s “Young Folks.”
As soon as the clock struck 8:45, the lights dimmed down and the crowd shifted in anticipation for the main act. As the lights on the stage pulsed white and large vibrations shook the building, everyone geared up and prepared for the band by giving loud cheers and calling out for the band.
Then, little by little, each member began to pop up on stage. First the drummer, next the bassist, then the guitarists. While the audience went wild, the band began to play an elongated intro to “Look Alive.” By then, it seemed all members were on stage except for the lead singer. As the song started to pick-up, the final member ran onto the stage, grabbed the mic and the first song began.
With the workings of Jasper Harris and Ben Acker on guitar, Attila Anrather on drums and Ben Roter on vocals, the group gave an extremely powerful and emotional performance that moved the crowd from beginning to end. They played many songs across their discography. Some songs included in the setlist were, “What I Wanted,” the first single off of their upcoming album, Portraits, “Dead,” from the 2022 album, Into the Rift and their single “Kiwi.” Throughout the entire performance, you could see their passion for music radiating from their sound and through their facial expressions. It was a great performance that I am so happy to have seen.
They continued with a few other songs before finishing off some of their most popular hits, including “T Love.” Once they were done, they thanked Houston for coming out and exited the stage, but they weren’t quite done yet.
Eager for more, the audience called out for the band: “Encore, encore, encore!” This was repeated over and over, until the group returned to the stage again. They came out for another song that had the audience singing and dancing their hearts out. The crowd wasn’t ready for the night to be over just yet and you could tell by their continuing vibrancy. After the song concluded, the band promptly left the stage but was asked to come out again from the crowd. “One more song, one more song!” Giving into their wishes, Quarters of Change was back out for the final song of the night. They gifted the crowd with the audience pick of “Chloe.” The show ended off on such a high note, that the lead singer even decided to join the audience and jump with them before leaving with the band as soon as the song finished.
Overall, it was a really great night. I would highly recommend seeing Quarters of Change before their tour concludes in mid-October. More info for their shows can be found here!
I am from Houston, Texas and currently attending the University of Houston as a marketing major! From attending concerts, playing guitar, and collecting vinyl, I love anything that has to do with music. Some of my favorite artists include The Strokes, Omar Apollo, and boygenius. Besides that, I really like shopping, watching Pitch Perfect, and discovering new places in Houston!
