Pom Pom Squad Puts on a Mesmerizing Performance at White Oak Music Hall

Pom Pom Squad visited White Oak Music Hall on March 25 during The Mirror Ball Tour with special guest Caroline Kingsbury.

From Brooklyn, New York, Pom Pom Squad is an indie rock group lead by front woman Mia Berrin. Formed in 2015, the band has put out three albums and many singles and EPs. Their most recent album, Mirror Starts Moving Without Me, was released in October of last year. Pom Pom Squad kicked off their Mirror Ball Tour on February 26, and visited White Oak Music Hall in Houston on March 25 with support from Caroline Kingsbury.

As special guest Caroline Kingsbury took the stage, the crowd was already full of excitement and cheers. From Los Angeles, California, Caroline Kingsbury is a singer-songwriter who encourages listeners to be their most authentic and loving selves. She is a trans rights activist and an inspiration to many.

Kingsbury has been making music since 2016, and released her debut full length album Heaven’s Just A Flight back in 2021. As she performed, she sported her signature 80s-inspired look, including electric blue eyeshadow, a leotard with a chunky belt, blue tights and metallic boots. Her music itself also seems to be inspired by 1980s pop, and contains many elements that you may hear in a track by Madonna or Cyndi Lauper. Kingsbury performed some of her most popular songs including “Kissing Someone Else” and “Our House”.

She held up a trans flag during part of her performance, making the audience erupt into applause. She made a fantastic, memorable opener for the night, and set the stage perfectly for the night to follow.

Pom Pom Squad began their set with the lead single from Mirror Starts Moving Workout Me, called “Downhill”. Singer Mia Berrin wore a stunning corset top with a pleated cheerleader skirt and knee-high lace up boots embellished with mini pom poms. She was covered from head to toe in shimmering rhinestones and sparkled on stage like an ethereal disco ball.

Many fans in the crowd were also dressed to the nines, wearing outfits similar to Mia’s signature look. Mia and her band rocked out on stage and carried incredible stage presence throughout the entire night. They jumped and danced around, and the audience followed.

Pom Pom Squad played two covers during the show, “Black Sheep” by Metric and “Crimson & Clover” by Tommy James & the Shondells. Pom Pom Squad even released a cover of “Crimson & Clover” on the 2021 sophomore album Death of a Cheerleader. The group played many of their most popular tracks such as “Drunk Voicemail” and “Crying”. They were very interactive with the crowd and created a true connection with the fans, who were loving it all.

As an encore, Pom Pom Squad performed “Red With Love” and “Head Cheerleader”, both from Death of a Cheerleader. Pom Pom Squad’s Mirror Ball Tour will conclude on April 4 in the band’s hometown of Brooklyn, New York at the Music Hall of Williamsburg.
