mxmtoon delivers an emotional show in Houston, taking audiences through time with a mix of nostalgic hits and new tunes from her latest album liminal space
Fans settled in with anticipation and excitement, many rushed to the merch tables while others aimed to secure the best spot. Luna Li, a talented multi-instrumentalist from Toronto opened the show making small conversation with fans noting that she was feeling a bit under the weather. Nevertheless, she put on a mesmerizing performance filled with breathtaking live instrumental and stunning vocals.




She performed one of her most popular songs, “2516,” transitioning between instruments—starting with the flute, then moving to the violin and finally picking up her guitar—showcasing her impressive multi-instrumental talents. She continued the night making conversation with fans and giving a stellar show. At one point she introduced the song “I Imagine,” stating, “This song is about falling in love with a person and a song and confusing the two together.” She plays this song on the piano. To wrap up her set, Luna asked the crowd to get down low and jump, bringing the energy back up before mxmtoon came out.



Maia, more commonly known as mxmtoon, took the stage with beautiful lighting and an amazing set design as she started the liminal space tour experience, which was filled with light hearted jokes and an overall fun time. She mentions she’s played in Houston four times now and says, “Do you know what Houston reminds me of?” before playing “i hate texas.” The room was filled with excitement as everyone sang along.
Keeping the energy up, she played another fan favorite “prom dress,” a song that notably blew up on TikTok in 2020, shaping her career today. With all the jumping and singing, mxmtoon takes a moment to catch her breath and speak to fans. In the crowd, she sees a sign “Hello my name is also Maia,” she reads. “No way spelled the same way? –Our parents right, great minds think alike,” she continued to joke.



The performance took turn into a more melodic and vulnerable atmosphere as mxmtoon talked more about, liminal space, her latest album release. She notes that the entire production and team behind the album consisted entirely of women allowing her to open up and write her most raw songs yet. Touching on subjects such as her relationship with religion, nostalgia and more, she notes that her most vulnerable song as “now’s not the time” featuring Luna Li. The song discusses her relationship with her mother and the bittersweet love she feels.
She brings the energy back up playing “mona lisa,” dancing around on stage and just having fun with her performance. mxmtoon is a versatile artist capable of being both open and vulnerable as well as fun and whimsical. Her stage presence is amusing to watch and makes you want to both cry and also sing and dance along with her.
