On June 7th, band MisterWives and duo Lawrence brought their incredible sounds to White Oak Music Hall in Houston with special guests Winnetka Bowling League.
The night started off with a fun set by Winnetka Bowling, who played tunes like “Slow Dances” and “CVS.” After their set was over, Lawrence took the stage in one of the best performances I’ve ever seen this year. Lawrence consists of sibling duo Clyde and Gracie Lawrence from New York, and they definitely showcased their musical chops and strong stage dynamic. Their songs were extremely fun and had everyone in the crowd dancing. The best part of their set is that they had a bucket of ball pit balls with cover song suggestions Lawrence fans got to write on during their VIP session. They played “Say My Name” by Destiny’s Child, which was ironically the perfect ode to Houston’s hometown heroine Beyonce, and “It’s Gonna Be Me” by NSYNC. Some other highlights from the set included the duo playing an unreleased song called “23” and a bunch of songs from their newest album Hotel TV. They ended their set with their most well-known song “Don’t Lose Sight.”
Before MisterWives came on, “Mr. Brightside” by the Killers came on the pre-show playlist and the crowd went nuts! As soon as the song ended, the house lights dimmed and it was time for MisterWives. The band hails from the streets of New York who are currently signed with Fueled by Ramen, and released their latest album Superbloom in 2020. Lead singer Mandy Lee came out rocking a black ‘fit and started off the set with the track “finding my way home.” They played a range of songs from the new album (“whywhywhy” and “coming up for air”) and some of the hits (“Reflections” and “Our Own House”), and a fun rendition of No Doubt’s “Just a Girl.” Lee told the crowd that everyone needed to dance and sweat the night away, which is exactly what happened.
The Sounds of Summer was definitely one of the best shows Off Record Blog had the honor of covering as the vibes and music were immaculate. Check out some photos from the show:
I'm a full-time music journalist/photographer from Houston, number one Paramore fan and Husky dog owner. I have a B.S in Radio-Television-Film from UT Austin and a M.A in Mass Communications from the University of Houston, which makes me smart! On top of being an avid concert-goer and movie fanatic, I love bonding with others over the power of local music and media.
