Mad Libs and Melodies: Roar Takes on Fort Worth

Roar stops at Tulips in Fort Worth, Texas for an evening full of extraordinary music and an unforgettable crowd.

It didn’t take long for the Tulips venue to quickly fill up with excited fans ready to hear their favorite tracks from the beloved band, Roar. Some of the crowd gathered around the stage counting down the minutes till showtime, others found themselves scattered throughout the venue conversing with friends, new and old. Regardless of how the audience spent their time before the show started, there was an overwhelming sense of excitement in the room, with the anticipation for the lights to dim.

Finally, as the room grew dark and the spotlights hit the stage, a wave of cheers greeted the opener, Phantomelo, a local indie band from Dallas. This band was nothing short of spectacular, fusing electronic elements to rock sounds, the crowd was consumed with good energy as the catchy beats filled the venue. As their time on stage came to an end, the audience was left begging for more and many left with new tracks to add to their playlists.

It wasn’t long after Phantomelo left the stage when Roar came out to plug in their instruments and prepare for a night of fun. roar is an Arizona based indie rock band with lead singer Owen Richard Evans.  With Roar’s break out songs “I Can’t Handle Change” and “Christmas Kids” it wasn’t long until the band gained a large amount of exposure. With Tulips filled up, their music proved to be just that good.

As Roar began to play, the audience was filled with smiles and applause. Many fans were screaming their favorite lyrics and singing songs they had anticipated to hear. After the band played a few songs they paused to ask the audience a few questions, but instead of the regular “how are you guys doing,” Evans asked for a noun, and then an adjective, and then a verb, and continued to fill in his Mad Lib on his phone. It was very evident that this was the first time many audience members had done a Mad Lib with their favorite artist’s during their concert.

Although the night was full of fun, laughs, and singing, Roar eventually wrapped up their show while fans left begging for more. Roar might be done with their night in Dallas, Texas, but they are only about halfway done with their 2024 Southern US tour, anticipated to wow plenty more crowds.

I am currently attending the University of North Texas with a photojournalism major. I love going to concerts of all genres, whether I am stage diving or headbanging, I never miss an opportunity to appreciate live music. In my free time, I enjoy thrifting for CD's and records, spending time with my cats, going to art exhibits, and traveling (especially to NYC). My biggest inspiration is Danny Clinch, and one day I aspire to open up my own gallery to showcase my work!
