whisk is the project of Emily Gritsman, an Austin-based singer/songwriter. She’s joined by lead guitarist Frank Caballero, bassist Alex Corbeill, and drummer Antone Leikam. This spring, she released her debut record The Everything EP, and now they are touring across Texas and New York this summer. Her hard-hitting indie rock band stirred things up at Mohawk Austin on Monday, delivering one of their most fun and engaging shows yet.

The show started with Bicycle Boy, another Austin-based indie rock band on the rise. Evan, Zac, Zach, and Jesse played shredding guitar solos, wah-wah pedal bass lines, and jumped around on stage in an all-out performance. They played their new single “Honey, Oh Honey!” in addition to some exciting unreleased tracks.

After that amazing set, Retro Cowgirl entered the stage, another local rock band with a groovy twist. The four-piece group includes lead vocalist Lucky Steele, lead guitarist Luis Fiallos, bassist Gabe Jimenez and drummer Jonluca Biagini. They played a great set that made the crowd alternate between dancing and headbanging.

Finally, whisk played a set that somehow went even harder than their recorded tracks. The guitar solo from “China Blue” got an extended, more electric live version, with Gritsman joining the crowd and hanging out as lead guitarist Frankie Caballero got the chance to show off. Then, the band covered the song “Wet Dream” by Wet Leg, a fun rock track that fits well with many of their songs such as “Turkey” and “Spider Census” (not spider senses). A highlight of every show is the seven-and-a-half-minute long track “Everything,” a winding ballad with long, slow builds that turn into explosive choruses. The band brings their all to every show as they continue to rise through the indie rock world.
