Up and coming pop and R&B artist Lexa Gates brings her soothing vocals to House of Blues Houston with support from Jordan Love.
Lexa Gates is slowly but surely becoming a staple in the music scene. Most recently, Gates released her latest album titled Elite Vessel, which was released on October 18th. This serves as the fifth album for the independent artist, and it’s on its way to garner the singer much recognition.
At a first listen, Elite Vessel is a complete whirlwind of notions regarding identity, past experiences, anxiety, depression, and romance. It’s all curated in a way that takes you through emotions in detail. From the mental anguish with a retro-pop melody in the track “Stacy’s Chips” to the poignant yet heartfelt minimalist track “Lover,” the album serves as Lexa Gates’ strongest work to date in terms of poetic lyrics, melodies and powerful producing. Five albums later, it’s clear in Elite Vessel that Lexa Gates has found her direction in the fusion of R&B and hip-hop through her interchangeable singing and rapping.
With her album’s release, Gates also participated in a self-made social experiment at Union Square / NYC. The singer spent 10 hours in an intimate and personal display, inside a transparent box, exploring the concept of “her vessel” and its deep connection to her music (cited from Good Looks PR press release). Lexa continuously listened to her album on loop with no food, no water and no restroom – encouraging fans to join her outside of the vessel and interact in their own ways. This served as an immersive experience for the singer and fans alike, as the album comes from deep personal connections.
Along with the album, Lexa Gates announced her first ever headline tour, with her second tour stop being in Houston’s beloved House of Blues. While her show occurred in the Bronze Peacock room, it was absolutely packed out with adoring fans. The show was deemed sold-out, along with many of her dates on the tour – further proving her skyrocketing popularity.
Lexa Gates appeared on stage with a beautiful, flowing white gown, her signature winged eyeliner and a red flower bouquet. Fans everywhere screamed as she began her set, and had a great interaction with almost everyone in the crowd. Gates picked up handmade gifts and flowers, gave water to fans, as well as threw merch to random fans.
Her entire set was organized in a way to highlight her discography, but she managed to bring out underrated gems from her Elite Vessel, such as “Lately Nothing,” “Yourself” and “What You Wish For.” She continued to play more of her popular tracks like “Stupid” and “I Just Can’t Be Alone.”
One of the highlights of her setlist was the way Gates partnered together two of her biggest cult-classic hits. The singer sang her single “Angel,” in which she sings the angelic outro (pun-intended) as the backing track goes silent. The outro is joined by a harmony, and the crowd stood quiet. As Lexa finished, the crowd cheers and she says “Oh, I know what y’all are afraid of” as a play on words from her song. The crowd immediately gets lit as the intro to “Rotten to the Core” begins to play, and everyone sang the song word for word.
Lexa remained kind and humble throughout her entire set. Her stage persona is exactly how she presents herself in her music and on her socials as she often made silly quips to keep the warm crowd entertained. Her songs remain poetic and powerful, and fans took it all to heart in the best way possible. For Lexa’s first headline tour + her second stop on the tour, she has the whole performance knack down to a tee as her presence comes off as natural. She surrounded herself with fans who will support her every step of the way, and we know for a fact that she will go far.
