Ready to have your mind melted? On Saturday, November 16th, Australian genre-bending rock band King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard brought the mind fuzz to White Oak Music Hall’s Lawn stage. Their first venture to Space City, King Gizzard played to a near-sold out house in support of their newest album: Flight b741.
Known for their energy-filled live shows and refusal to be tied down to any specific genre, the band from Melbourne has made a name for itself through one of the most prolific discographies in the music business. With 26 studio albums to date, the six-man outfit has to be one of the most productive acts in recent memory.
Doors opened at 6:30pm, with throngs of fans eagerly waiting to get their spot on the barricade. The lawn quickly filled to the brim, and the merch line remained lengthy until the end of the show.
Kicking things off was King Stingray. Another Aussie act, hailing from Australia’s Northern Territory, King Stingray drew in the crowd with their brand of psychedelic surf rock.
Taking the stage just after 8:30, King Gizzard bursts into the first of their 15-track setlist, “People-Vultures“.
At one point in the show, the band introduced their ‘synth table’ which saw the group huddle around a table overflowing with synthesizers and wires for two tracks off of 2023’s The Silver Chord, before closing the show with three of their heavier, more metal focused songs.
The band’s devoted fanbase didn’t disappoint either. One of the most energetic and involved crowds Houston has seen in a while, crowdsurfers regularly made their way over the barricade throughout the show.
Playing for nearly two-and-a-half hours, the band made their way through songs off of nine different albums. Keeping the energy high throughout the set, King Gizzard made the stage their own until White Oak’s curfew kicked in.
Between their prolific writing and recording and various shows across the globe, it may be a while before the band makes their way back to the Bayou City, though when they do, we’ll be waiting.
