Jesse Detor is Bringing Back Riot Grrrl: Artist Spotlight

Fueled with confidence, precision, and a can’t-do attitude reminiscent of Riot Grrrl legends from decades past, it’s become apparent to anyone watching that Jesse Detor is starbound.

The Minneapolis-based artist first started her music journey after discovering Phoebe Bridgers‘ song “Motion Sickness“. Eventually her love for this song caused her to discover a passion for music. Later, she released her first single “Warning“, a passionate, bass-heavy anthem that lets her talent shine. Detor sings about about love, disappointment, and failure, leaving her fans were hooked.

However, they wouldn’t have to wait long, as her breakthrough song, “Sofia, I’m Sorry” would be released shortly. Detor demonstrated her passion and attention to lyricism. This devastating anti-love song about a doomed situationship, weaves its lyrics into your heart, with its raw, powerful angst. Her fans were immediately hooked and wanting more. As her success continued, she would go on to release more music. She recently released a new EP, It Wasn’t Supposed to End Like This, a compilation mix of some of her best singles.

As time progresses, it’ll be interesting to see where she goes next, as she continues to make her mark in her local scene, expanding her roots farther. Anyone who listens to bands like Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney, and Veruca Salt, as well as other Riot Grrrl or is a fan of female-fronted rock, should check her out and give her listen. She pays homage to those legendary artists by taking inspiration from them, while bringing her own influence to the genre.

Currently, Jesse Detor is still finishing her education at Berklee College of Music, but she is almost always playing shows. You can find more up do date information on her Instagram and website.
