Hailing from the streets of Oak Cliff, Texas, bedroom-pop band Luna Luna are on the rise with their amazing collection of soothing and psychedelic sounds.
While Texas is home to several major artists, it is also home to a diverse local music scene that hosts many up & coming artists. Luna Luna, an indie band from Oak Cliff (near Dallas), formed in 2017 and consists of members Kavvi, Kaylin, Danny and Ryan. Their discography is extensive and includes a full-length album and a handful of singles/EPs.
Luna Luna’s music contains a blend of latinx influences and dream-pop sequences. They are known for weaving spanish lyrics in their music, further proving how important their latinx roots are for them. Their debut EP, For Lovers Only, was released shortly after their formation, and features 7 songs including the romanticized “For You” and the jazzy “80s tune.” The EP’s overall psychedelic sound has a way to immediately hook listeners, which allowed Luna Luna to explore new blends in future works.
The band released their second EP, Carousel in 2019, which served as a sequel to their first EP and contained more prominent features with other artists such as Tony Tone and Victor Internet. Luna Luna was on the rise as they appeared in numerous shows/festivals, including SXSW and Jam Music Festival.
Even though they released singles like “Luv on Me” and “Time” during the COVID-19 Pandemic, they took time to focus on their debut album, Flower Moon, which was eventually released in 2021. While the album featured their notable dream-like sound, it also introduced their shift from melancholic melodies to a more latinx-based experimental sound. Their sound is more diverse, as heard in the pleasing instrumental “Breathing Yellow” and the funky track “Golden.”
Luna Luna is a perfect example of an ambitious band who are not afraid to experiment and embed their latinx identities into their art. They are constantly mastering their own genre by creating a distinctive blend of genuine music and relatable lyrics, which allowed them to make new fans along their journey. Luna Luna is a worthy band to check out, as this modern indie band is just getting started.
NOTE: As of December 8th, Luna Luna is currently on their Flower Moon tour with openers Estereomance and Boyo. They will make their way down to the Empire Garage in Austin on December 12th, which is almost sold out! Stay tuned for Off Record Blog’s coverage of the show, which will include a photo gallery and review.
