Beloved Houston band Shallowater perform an intimate show presented by Rite Field Records in East Downtown with support from Dallas artists Skirts and Georgia Britt.
Starting off the night was local Dallas singer + songwriter Georgia Britt, who drove all the way down to Houston to perform as part of the wonderful lineup. She served as a solo artist and performed with a drum loop and her guitar, making the moment more intimate. Britt sang songs from her latest project titled Flowers for Myself, which she self-released + produced in the Fall of 2023. Be on the lookout for our exclusive interview with Georgia Britt about the process and her inspirations!
The band skirts took the stage soon after – the band from Dallas serves as the passion-project of singer/songwriter Alex Montenegro, who pours her heart out to every single song. After releasing two albums in the span of five years, skirts continue to show love and rapport with fans through different music trends. Their set felt intimate, despite a few mishaps such as a broken guitar strap and a missing capo, Montenegro always made sure to include fans with cutesy interactions. One of the final songs played was the track “Annie” from their sophomore album Great Big Wild Oak, whom Montenegro dedicated to all of the people named Annie in the crowd.
Once the small yet intimate venue was packed to a tee, Shallowater began their headlining set with a slow-moving jam session. The West Texas based band has been around in the Houston local scene for a while, and have performed with numerous local favorites like Jumprope and Breathwish. The band released their debut album in late December 2023, which is an album full of intricate tones and expressive lyrics. Throughout the night, the crowd swayed in unison to the soothing sounds of Shallowater, who performed songs from their discography, including “Laredo,” “Angels” and “Birdshot.” Overall, this showcase was a fun experience that allowed different Texas artists to convey their new releases, making the night feel more celebratory than anything. I'm a full-time music journalist/photographer from Houston, number one Paramore fan and Husky dog owner. I have a B.S in Radio-Television-Film from UT Austin and a M.A in Mass Communications from the University of Houston, which makes me smart! On top of being an avid concert-goer and movie fanatic, I love bonding with others over the power of local music and media.
