The new album Giving The World Away illustrates themes ranging from disillusionment, insecurities, and regaining confidence.
Australian singer/songwriter Harriet Pilbeam, better known as Hatchie, recently released her electrifying and mesmerizing sophomore album, Giving The World Away on April 22, 2022. The debut of a new sound integrates her signature dream-pop/shoegaze sound with more vibrant synth-rock infused elements. This elevated step creates a new and redefined sound for Hatchie allowing the opportunity for a musically expansive universe and the ability to reach for new directions. Giving The World Away is an album that represents one’s personal journey into rediscovery and embracing your authenticity despite challenges.
Hatchie’s musical journey as an artist first began with her EP Sugar and Spice in 2018 which launched her into stardom within the indie-pop genre. Fast forward to a year later, her debut album Keepsake released in June 2019 established her as the dream-pop darling with the use of her luscious vocals and infectious melodies with hypnotic instrumentals and producing some her most recognizable tracks such as “Stay With Me” and “Without a Blush.”
The new album Giving The World Away illustrates themes ranging from disillusionment, insecurities, and regaining confidence. One of the first standout tracks on the album is “Quicksand” which is a delightful transition from her debut album Keepsake to sophomore album Giving The World Away. The track showcases the idea of Hatchie’s personal battle with viewing success and wanting more, becoming stuck, and soon coming to terms with taking back your power. The lyrics read: “If I had everything I wanted would I want more? Would I keep fighting if there’s nothing left to fight for?” The song features a dazzling and rhythmic instrumental with guitar riffs overlayed on top of the upbeat drums and funky bass. The staggered and delayed vocals in the track constructs a euphoric atmosphere that sweeps you off your feet. This track undeniably wants you to dance the night away under a disco ball.
The second stand out track “The Rhythm” is a perfect example of Hatchie’s greatness and expanded sound that illustrates her growth as an artist. The track begins with stylistic unique drums that seamlessly flows into a powerful layered synth-pop production and harmonies. In the middle of the song a breakdown emerges that possesses punchy drums, heavy bass, and heightened guitars that transport you into a different dimension with its illusionistic sound.
Lastly, the closing song of the album, “Til We Run Out of Air” features heartfelt lyricism with enchanting performance that leads to a build up of the full band playing an intoxicating arrangement. The lyrics state: “Lost count of the hours dipped in misery, day melts into night. Your future, though shrouded in mystery, can still be revived.” This can illustrate battling your emotions and having them get the best of you until it consumes your every thought. However, this can also refer to Hatchie’s anxiety about the future of her music career.
Giving The World Away unconditionally encapsulates Hatchie’s potential into becoming a constantly blossoming artist by creating a visionary and dynamic atmosphere. The reinvention of Hatchie’s musical career in terms of overcoming fear, songwriting, and redefined sound led to an unbelievable sophomore concept album that will become a staple in her discography.
