Alternative indie band Grouplove played a high energy show at Stubb’s Austin on September 28, 2023. The show was vibrant and colorful and everyone who came out enjoyed the performance greatly.
Grouplove is an indie pop band which formed in 2009 in Los Angeles, California, United States. The band consists of Christian Zucconi (vocals, guitar), Hannah Hooper (vocals, keyboards), Andrew Wessen (vocals, guitar), Sean Gadd (bass, vocals), and Ryan Rabin (drums). Grouplove brought the energy from the get-go during their performance. Opening with “I’m With You” and other tracks from their sophomore album Spreading Rumours (which turned ten this year), the band members jumped around from different corners of the stage constantly moving and keeping the audience captivated. Vocalists Hannah and Christian took center stage as they belted out lyrics and created a vibrant performance through movement and voice throughout the entire night. Throughout the night Zucconi and Hooper were dancing back and forth with one another and felt like the dynamic duo of the set. The band did not fail to bring their charisma and vibrance to every single song they performed. Each song was orchestrated with detail to the band’s vibe and energy.
The lighting of the stage changed throughout the set from vibrant reds + oranges to blues + greens – the reds even mirrored Hooper’s red and white jumpsuit. The band brought a level of charisma that seemed to be reflected in the audience’s experience of the band’s performance, as there was not a song where the audience did not sing, dance, and jump along to their music. One of my personal highlights of the concert was when the band played their 2016 hit “Ways to Go.” The entire crowd sang along to the lyrics, and no one in the venue stood still. They celebrated their older albums like Never Trust a Happy Song and Big Mess, as well as promoted thier newer albums, including the new 2023 album I Want It All Right Now. Grouplove has been around for a while, and their music evolves with them as time moves on. These indie darlings have a way of creating timeless pop songs that can be sung along to for decades to pass – their show was consistently engaging, vibrant, and overall entertaining.
I am from Austin, Texas and grew up in a small town near San Antonio. I started photography when I was a young teen and I have always had an inclination towards art and music. I have been running a small photo business for six years now, and have learned and exciting things as well as engaged in really cool photography-related opportunities in that time. When I am not taking photos, I am a college student studying electronic media, I love thrifting, I run a small zine called "Sea of Youth" with my best friends, and I am exploring the outdoors.
