Glass Beams visited White Oak Music Hall in Houston on October 9 with support from Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith.
From Melbourne, Australia, Glass Beams is a trio that is redefining modern music. They fuse many genres into one — surf rock, traditional Indian music, and psychedelic punk are seemingly their heaviest influences. Having only formed in 2020, the band has gained popularity fast. Their most famous song “Mahal” has accumulated over 10 million streams since its February 2024 release. Incredibly, Glass Beams have yet to release a full length album, yet they brought in a full house of fans during their show at White Oak Music Hall on October 9.
Opening for the night was composer and producer Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. Based in LA, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith has released 10 albums since her start in 2012. She made for a perfect opener for Glass Beams, as her music is just as chill and groovy as theirs. She performed several of her hypnotic, psychedelic songs under red stage lights, mesmerizing the audience.
As Glass Beams took the stage, they sported their gold bejeweled masks which they are most known for. The trio’s anonymity allows them to focus on their music, rather than egos and appearances. In turn, this has helped the band gain popularity due to the obscurity and their overall mysteriousness. The band stood amongst glowing orange and yellow lights as they performed their long and enchanting set.
Glass Beams’ music is entirely instrumental, and yet the crowd still recognized each track and danced along to the tunes. Everything about the performance seemed so organic and relaxed, almost as if it were all improvised and the band were simply jamming together. They of course performed “Mahal” along with other notable songs like “Mirage” from their 2021 EP of the same name, and “Orb” from the Mahal EP from 2024. Glass Beams put on an incredible performance and all in attendance seemed to love it. Glass Beams’ American Tour will continue until October 17 in Atlanta, Georgia.
I’m a Houston based photographer who loves being around live music and all the creative people involved in the local music scene. I enjoy capturing performers and artists doing what they love and the essence of how live music makes people feel. When Im not behind the lens, I love trying new things and visiting new places.
