Supported by Huron John, Freak Slug delivers an incredible performance in Chicago. Fans gathered at the Empty Bottle ready to enjoy fun, sexy vibes.
As you enter the Empty Bottle, chatter and the smell of beer fill your senses. Tall neon lights catch your attention as Huron John and drummer, Rick Wess take the stage.
With a vibrant energy and upbeat tunes, Huron and his partner in crime give the crowd exactly what they’re looking for – a good time. The Nashville duo provides a Y2K vibe with an emo flair in wide-length denim and oversized t-shirts. Jumping from synth to guitar throughout the performance, Huron shows us his true talents. He is undoubtedly the moment. You can feel the passion in his work through the Empty Bottle speakers as he sings sad, yet upbeat songs.
Some audience members were uninterested, having full-on conversations with their backs turned to the stage, but others were fully engaged. A group of three friends had a blast, arms linked and swaying joyously side to side as they sang their hearts out.
The Chicago native performed a mix of old and new music. They surprised the audience with a cover of “1979” by The Smashing Pumpkins. As the lights dimmed and their set came to a close, the duo thanked the crowd and confidently exited the stage.
The crowd thickened as a projector screen lowered, displaying indie sleaze images behind the words “Freak Slug”. Loud banter and laughter fill the room as the anticipation for the headliner grows. Lights fall dark while taking center stage with a cherry red guitar, all eyes are on Xenya Genovese.
Dressed in black, Xenya and her band opened with one of my personal favorites, “Ya Ready”. Amped up, the crowd bobs around and singing along with the English icon. Her voice floats over the audience; which set a sensual vibe as red and purple lights shine down on her face while performing hit after hit on the Empty Bottle stage. Sexy, fun, and honest, Freak Slug echos her tunes to the Chicago fans.
As things slow down, she plays her most popular song, “Care” and the audience is hypnotized. As the setlist continues, the band is totally in sync. You can’t help but notice the amazing female drummer setting the perfect tempo. The classic English rockstars enjoy hot cups of tea as they fully embrace their performance. With the combination of new and old tracks, and an astounding cover of “Disorder” by Joy Division, the audience was in awe. After a classic encore at the Empty Bottle, Freak Slug and her band close a great Thursday night in Chicago.
The self-assured songwriter, visual artist, and musician Freak Slug, absolutely knows how to own a stage. I highly recommend catching this tour and adding her to your playlist. Her talent is clear and there’s no doubt she’ll be the next big thing!
