The Austin-based band Farmer’s Wife plays hometown send-off show before heading on tour for the summer.
Farmer’s Wife is a bubble-grunge alternative rock band formed in Austin, TX. Members Jude Hill, Molly Masson, Jaelyn Valero, Jacob Masson, and Derek Ivy have quickly gained a following both locally and across the country. The band released their first single in 2022 under the name Sludge, then released singles and their debut EP There’s a Monster in 2023.
Fellow Austin-based bands Nuclear Daisies and The Well open the night. Nuclear Daises is a seven-member ensemble with a more psychedelic sound, while The Well is just three members playing what they call “doom pop”, though they rock pretty hard too.
Headliner Farmer’s Wife takes to the stage with a setlist of both unreleased songs and fan favorites. The whole show uses projections by TV Eye Media- colorful and intricate patterns that project onto the band and blend performers with the background. This also includes a live video feed of the band projected back onto them, creating layers of performance. It’s an interesting visual style that works for slower tracks such as “Pool Song,” a love ballad, or the band’s latest single, the upbeat “Boheme.”
This show is the last before the band takes on the West Coast leg of their first headline tour. Farmer’s Wife has played many shows in Austin and built up an audience of fans who return time and time again. This show is no different- fans show up already wearing merch, singing all of the words, and moshing (when appropriate).
One of their best songs is “Shoe Goo.” The track repeats a cycle of rising and falling tension, creating cathartic waves throughout. The song uses layers of simple but effective descending guitar and bass lines, and the result is greater than the sum of its parts. “Show Goo” is always a great listen, and even better live.
Farmer’s Wife continues their headline tour this summer, then will open for Cloud Nothing’s tour in the fall.
I am an Austin, TX based filmmaker and photographer. I moved from Houston to attend the University of Texas at Austin, where I graduated in 2022. I'm a lifelong music lover and spend most of my weekends attending shows. Some recent favorites are K. Flay, Devon Again, and Farmer's Wife. Other than that, I enjoy reading, writing, playing volleyball, yoga, and gaming.
