Following her newfound fame status, singer Lexa Gates released her latest single “I Just Can’t Be Alone” produced by Billy Lemos, which was accompanied by a self directed and produced music video.
Lexa Gates is known for her raw emotions captured in song and through her unique rap style. She started off learning music theory and making music in her New York home, and later released her debut album Order of Events in 2020. Although she didn’t fully garner recognition until 2023, she released three more albums, including her latest album Universe Wrapped in Flesh back in 2022. Her single “Angel” went viral on TikTok, ultimately leading her to sell out shows everywhere, including a hometown show in Brooklyn earlier this year. Her artist launch reached new heights, but continues to be authentic, as heard in the latest single “I Just Can’t Be Alone.”
The single is meant to relate with the masses, as Lexa discusses the hardship of relationships through themes of love, fear of loneliness, and exploring self-identity. Through spoken word lyrics, Lexa sings about having a contradictory partner in her life. She sings about her internal conflict about having someone that trips over their own actions, specifically in both song verses.
Don’t call my phone, buggin’ out // Feeling stuck, please let me out // Wait, please don’t let me go // Wait, less love, I don’t know // I can’t deal with this sh*t though

In addition to being a unique and soulful singer/songwriter, Lexa Gates establishes her creative vision through the video. She continues to reflect upon the painful experience of falling for someone who is never around, as she continues to sing about her complex notions. Of course, the single’s music video also encapsulates just that. Each location Lexa appears at, she remains alone – from the comforts of her own home to a public park, she shows that nothing beats the feeling of purposely being alone.
The Queens native will be performing a sold-out show at the Echoplex in Los Angeles on August 14th, and will be releasing a new project in the next coming months. Check out the works of Lexa Gates here.
I'm a full-time music journalist/photographer from Houston, number one Paramore fan and Husky dog owner. I have a B.S in Radio-Television-Film from UT Austin and a M.A in Mass Communications from the University of Houston, which makes me smart! On top of being an avid concert-goer and movie fanatic, I love bonding with others over the power of local music and media.
