Disco Balls and Candelabras: CULTS Grace the Stage at House of Blues Houston

On August 21st, alternative duo, CULTS, and opener, Bnny, blessed the eyes and ears of Houston as their soft voices and captivating visuals made for an ethereal performance at the House of Blues.

After the doors were opened at 7PM, fans flooded into the Bronze Peacock room for a sold-out show. An hour later, indie-rock band Bnny took the stage. Their set was a mix of pleasant guitar riffs, upbeat bass lines and lovely vocals. Towards the end of the set, lead singer Jessica Viscius asked the house to turn on the disco ball. Once on, the room glittered with the revolving reflection of the ball and Viscius asked everyone to grab a partner and dance. It was a warm start to a great show.

Around 9PM, the lights dimmed increasingly low and a large projection of stars and a moon were cast over the stage, large candelabras placed across the floor were lit. As the crowd cheered for the main act, the band entered one by one. The set started with “Crybaby,” “Left My Keys” and “Knots,” all tracks from their newest album, To the Ghosts.

The night continued with the flawless vocals of Madeline Follin and talents of multi-instrumentalist, Brian Oblivion. Although on tour for their newest project, the duo was sure to give some love to their older albums as well. In addition to the music from To the Ghosts, they also performed songs from Static, Host and their self-titled album.

Throughout the set, Follin would point out the pizza that was being sold at the back of the venue, welcoming anyone in the crowd to pass one forward. Towards the end of the set, she got her wish. To show her gratitude, she waved the slice around during a soulful performance of “You Know What I Mean.”

The show concluded with one of their biggest hits, “Always Forever.” It was overall a great concert that left the crowd buzzing. Catch CULTS all throughout the United States until mid-October by getting tickets here!

I am from Houston, Texas and currently attending the University of Houston as a marketing major! From attending concerts, playing guitar, and collecting vinyl, I love anything that has to do with music. Some of my favorite artists include The Strokes, Omar Apollo, and boygenius. Besides that, I really like shopping, watching Pitch Perfect, and discovering new places in Houston!
