Briston Maroney’s Stop in Houston on the Ultrapure Tour

Singer Briston Maroney gives a colorful performance at White Oak Music Hall in Houston. The show was accompanied by Willow Avalon and The Snarls.

Known for his long hair and indie-rock tunes, Briston Maroney is a force of power that keeps shaking things up in the music scene. He started touring with his new album, Ultrapure, in October 2023 and will continue until the end of April 2024. On March 5, Maroney stopped in Houston to give his Houstonian fans one of the best nights of their lives.

Up first to perform was Willow Avalon. Unfortunately her set was missed, but after speaking with audience members, there was nothing but amazing things to be said about her. Some words used to describe her include, “angelic,” “astonishing” and “bright.” Her standout song seemed to be her new hit that has been spread all across TikTok recently, “Gettin’ Rich, Goin’ Broke.”

Next to perform was the Snarls. This all-girl trio brought all their energy with them, which the crowd really enjoyed. Their alt-rock tunes were super fun to listen to and their stage presence was electric, as they interacted, connected and shared their music with the audience.

Last up was alternative singer, Briston Maroney. Before the singer even walked out, the crowd’s eyes were glued to the stage as they stayed in awe of the set up. With iridescent foil plastered everywhere and shapes such as hearts and eyes all over, the stage looked like a beautifully quirky lagoon of some sort. Just by the backdrop alone, fans knew they were in for a good time.

The set began with songs, “Body,” “Small Talk” and “Breathe.” The performer’s iconic strong vocals and slight rasp were definitely present this night in every song he sang. He sounded just as his recordings, which is super admirable and showcases his incredible talent.

Another aspect of this show that was very impressive, were the lights. The lights were constantly changing colors, strobing or moving at a super fast tempo. It was always something different each second, which added something amazing to the overall performance. After speaking with the really nice girl at the merch stand, she revealed that these were all done live and by hand by Maroney’s light guy. Nothing about the lights are programmed, which is absolutely insane (in a good way).

The singer continued with songs such as, “Sinkin’,” “Under My Skin” and “I’ve Been Waiting.” Just before the show ended, it was time for the singer to sing one of his biggest hits, “Freakin’ Out on the Interstate.” This rendition was extra special because Maroney revealed he would be bringing out a special guest. This guest was a young boy around thirteen or fourteen, who asked prior to the show to play guitar for the song. It was a heartwarming moment for the crowd as the kid was able to shred with one of his favorite singers.

Overall, it was a great night. Probably one of the best shows many have seen in a while. Briston Maroney will be on the Ultrapure tour just until the end of March. I would definitely recommend catching him if you can. Find more info about the tour here!

I am from Houston, Texas and currently attending the University of Houston as a marketing major! From attending concerts, playing guitar, and collecting vinyl, I love anything that has to do with music. Some of my favorite artists include The Strokes, Omar Apollo, and boygenius. Besides that, I really like shopping, watching Pitch Perfect, and discovering new places in Houston!
