Last Thursday, the electronic duo, Blue Hawaii brought an energetically charged, Boiler Room level performance to Club Dada.
The Canadian musical duo consists of Raphaelle Standell-Preston and Alexander Cowan. They’re known for their exploratory and atmospheric sounds that marry electronic, pop, ambient, and dance elements .Raphaelle’s ethereal and dreamy vocals beautifully enhance the atmospheric quality of their music. In 2023, they released three singles and 2 EPs, their latest being “All Star Dreamers” (EP). Two of their most-streamed tracks on Spotify are featured on their celebrated EP, ‘Under 1 House,’ released in 2020. Songs such as ‘I Felt Love,’ ‘No Drama,’ and ‘Where are the Keys’ exude a nostalgic and retro ambiance, both in the music and the album cover.
To start the set, Blue Hawaii performed an unreleased track that was accompanied by a fun prop, a pair of blue pom-poms which brought a cheerful and playful energy to the set. During their second song, the lights were dimmed to create a more laid-back atmosphere, allowing both the crowd and the artists to let loose and dance more freely.
To create a more relaxed atmosphere, the lights were dimmed during their second song, encouraging both the audience and the performers to let loose and dance with greater freedom.
Many of their tracks are naturally danceable rhythms, making them suitable for both introspective listening and letting loose on the dancefloor. This combination of danceable beats and ethereal components appears to be the core of what Blue Hawaii is. While Alexander is behind the DJ Booth, he is no stranger to grabbing the mic and offering backup vocals to raphaelle and coming center stage to perform. Like the song “L.O.V.E,” their music frequently evokes a sensation of transcendence and transports the listener through their distinctive aural landscape. This openness to experiment with various sounds and structures provides a welcoming yet fresh and stimulating environment.
I'm a Dallas based film photographer and designer. I'm an all-around lover of the arts, specifically music. I studied Visual Communication Design and Communication Technology at the University of Texas at Arlington. I discovered my love for photography after taking a black and white photo class in 2019, where I learned how to develop, scan, and print 35mm film. In my free time I like to try new restaurants, visit art museums, and read!
