Blondshell, or indie – rock singer, Sabrina Teitelbaum, brought a night of fun filled music paired with a melancholy vibe to the House of Blues Houston.
Blondshell isn’t your regular sad indie girl; she has spunk. Her performance at the House of Blues Houston showed that.
First, Minneapolis based shoegaze band, she’s green, opened for Blondshell. The band brought a fun start to the night with their experimental sounds. The audience swayed along to their music as the band ramped up the night.
As the show continued, Blondshell, everyone’s favorite blonde, appeared on stage, ready to indie-rock the crowd away. She opened her set with her all too real song, “23’s A Baby”. As a 23 year-old, who is going through tough stuff, I feel like Teitelbaum read my mind and transferred it into song form. The crowd, I’m assuming, was also filled with other sad women in their 20’s related to it too, and we cheered loudly to the song.
Blondshell plays the type of music for someone who is also angry at the patriarchy, and the objectification they experience, so obviously she paired it with a mini-marathon of her angrier songs “Toy”, “Sepsis”, “What’s Fair”, and “Veronica Mars”. Next, she played “Docket”, her recent feature with Bully, another indie-rock darling, which got the crowd even more excited.
A personal highlight of the night was her performance of Addison Rae’s “Diet Pepsi”. If you haven’t listened to Blondshell’s cover of “Diet Pepsi”, please watch the video below, then continue reading the article.
Personally, I love this cover because it plays to the original sexiness of Addison Rae’s cover, but adds an added layer of maturity, which makes it feel almost like a seduction. The roughness in Blondshell’s indie-rock sound contrasts the youth in Rae’s original version, making it such a good cover. It plays beautifully to the sound and concept in Rae’s sound, while adding a unique element.
Later in the show, Blondshell played her iconic song, “Kiss City”. As someone who is also single, this song is very relatable and a highlight of my music listening. Blondshell brings an amazing energy to this song every time she performs it, making it the highlight of my night. “
She ended the set with “Salad”, which served as a perfect closing song. It riled up the crowd enough to leave them wanting more of her. Check out Blondshell while she is still on tour.
