Badflower visited Houston on the second stop of their No Place Like Home Tour with support from Slothrust and MISSIO.
Formed in 2013, Badflower are an alternative rock band from Los Angeles, California. The group released their EP Temper in 2016, and their debut record OK, I’M SICK featuring their hit song “Ghost” in early 2019. Their most recent track “Detroit” dropped in July of this year and has already amassed over half a million streams. Badflower began their No Place Like Home Tour on September 3 in Dallas, then stopped in Houston at House of Blues the following day with support from openers Slothrust and MISSIO.
MISSIO kicked off the night by playing an energetic set full of hits that got the crowd jumping and moving from the very start. Comprised of Matthew Bruce (vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and producer) and David Butler (producer, engineer and multi-instrumentalist), the genre-bending duo from Austin gained immense popularity and momentum with the release of their debut 2017 album Loner, which features several of the group’s biggest hits. The band has remained highly popular and influential since, and currently have over 1 million listeners monthly. Additionally, MISSIO just released their newest track “Good Vibrations” featuring rock icon Wes Borland of Limp Bizkit on August 30, which the band performed as their final song of the night. MISSIO’s performance was nothing short of spectacular, with them performing several of their most popular tracks such as “Sing To Me” and “Everybody Gets High”.
Next to the stage was alternative indie band Slothrust. The group from Boston, Massachusetts is made up of members Leah Wellbaum (guitarist, singer and songwriter) and Will Gorin (drummer/percussionist). Since forming in 2010, Slothrust have released seven albums. The band is known for their quirky lyricism and catchy riffs, as well as their overall uniqueness and bubbly aesthetic. Leah Wellbaum was very talkative with the audience and had a strange, lighthearted humor which made the show feel intimate and authentic. They played many catchy tunes throughout their performance including their awesome cover of “Pony” by Ginuwine, which is featured on their 2023 album I Promise.
As Badflower took the stage, it was quickly apparent that the audience was in for an electric, thrilling show. Opening with “Teacher Has a Gun”, one of their latest singles, Badflower had the crowd ecstatic for the performance to come. Singer Josh Katz sported a lime green custom t-shirt with the words “brat flower” in reference to Charli xcx’s 2024 album BRAT, which has taken fans and the internet by storm this summer. The whole band was incredibly upbeat and dynamic onstage, making the entire show so much more entertaining to watch. Badflower performed a jam-packed set full of old and new tracks from several of their albums, and even threw in a cover of “Snuff” by iconic numetal band Slipknot. The group finished their set with an encore including their new single “Detroit”, as well as “30” and “Girlfriend”. All in all, Badflower, Slothrust, and MISSIO put on an amazing performance that will remain memorable for everyone in attendance.
