In a place like this, you can forget all about your high school prom – this was the place to be.
Despite the recent weather events, Alternative Prom did manage to find a new home. Super Happy Fun Land graciously accommodated as the new prom venue. Prom goers showed up with their prom dresses and boots, the boys showing up with their cowboy hats. To those looking for alt fashion, the vendors came through with awesome clothes, accessories, and even treats. In what could be a first there was even skating inside of the prom venue. Super Happy Fun Land can get hot, so prom goers were invited to drink the fruit punch (water). In a place like this, you would never miss normal prom. You could really be yourself here, and the attendees made their best use of that.
Starting the night was Cueva Ventana who came out screaming with their strained vocals, heavy bass, and dissonant chords filled with distortion. They were loud, awesome, and you could tell that they had something to say. A great way to get prom going.
Poison Apple followed through with their steady bass, drums that drive the songs forward, and voice and guitar sounds that carry emotions. They are sometimes quiet, sometimes loud, but they will move you along in the music.
Figure Below held the middle spot in the line up. Sometimes melodic, sometimes steady, their bass complimented the Intense drums. The drums were consistently loud and cool, they showcased this off most when their drummer held an awesome drum solo. You can tell they put lots of work into their set because they play tight.
Next up was Bovine. Their music begs you to dance with cool bass lines, smooth vocals that roll, and sick guitar riffs. The singing on their song “Baylee” was a stand out. In the middle of their set Bovine’s vocalist proudly announced alternative prom’s prom king and queen. Prom Queen was none other than Bovine’s vocalist’s own younger sister. What followed was an unexpected but beautiful moment between two sisters, and between the king and queen.
Sons of Honey finished the night with their unique sound. Their songs had a blend of quiet talking moments and loud yelling sections where you knew it was time to mosh. The screaming vocals carried passion and cool and supporting them where the crashing drums that kept the songs going. Sons of Honey treated the crowd to an unforgettable bass solo really showcasing that they do things their own way. Their one of a kind sound is worth checking out whenever they come out next. With some final goodbyes, alternative prom came to an end.
I’m a UH grad who likes to play music and take pictures. My main creative project is my band Superheated Microplastic where I’m the guitarist and vocalist. Lately I’ve been loving going to local shows and taking pictures of the bands. I love guitar based music and recently I’ve been getting into hardcore. I have two cats that I love very much, they are so dumb but so adorable.
