Anime, Hip-Hop and Zaza: Azizi Gibson Brings His Brand Of Rap To Austin On His Texas Tour Run

Azizi Gibson Stopped by Austin’s The Perish, on night two of his four-city Texas run.

LA rapper, Azizi Gibson hit Austin’s own, The Parish, as what was supposed to be his third leg of his four-town tour here in Texas. Because the weather is unpredictable and things happen, unfortunately Gibson missed playing Dallas the night before hitting the stage in Austin due to bad weather and unforeseen flight cancellations. Luckily that didn’t happen in Austin, dealing with adversity is just part of the music game, and the underground rap veteran was able to move on to Central Texas bringing down the house on his second show on his Texas tour.

Gibson has been in the game for over ten years with his diverse lyrical subject matter from relationships, to anime, video games and general life struggles, he brings an eccentric and refreshing sound to the hip hop scene. The rapper/producer is known for exploring unusual and creative styles of rap not only in his lyrics but also in his production. Collaborating with the likes of Hippie Sabotage, AKTHESAVIOR and his own unique production, Gibson really sets himself apart from the typical underground hip hop scene. Having come from a diverse background spending much of his childhood overseas from Germany, Africa, Thailand and the US, the artist has a multitude of cultural influences to pull from, which really comes through in his out-of-the-box style and delivery.

Coming fresh off the release of his Guilty Pleasures EP, Texas got a taste of what the artist can deliver, and he definitely came through for Austin. Playing hits like “Cabaret,” “Smoking with the Gods” and “Cobra,” along with a few new singles, some of which was his first time performing live, Gibson gave the crowd a little bit of everything from his catalog sprinkled in with some words of wisdom and general positivity. The vibes were as high as a Californian rapper and the music was on point, with no backing vocals mind you, an Azizi Gibson show is a great time for any hip hop fan.

I’m a photographer currently based in Austin after recently relocating from Denver, CO. I graduated from the University of Colorado, Denver in 2019 with a degree in Business Management. I love music of all genres and have been going to live shows since I was 5 years old. Some of my favorite artist currently include Freddie Gibbs, Lola Young, Ivy Lab and Knocked Loose, but that is always subject to change.
